Using a Terrarium to Study Fungi, their Ecosystems, and Much More
    #26676724 - 05/17/20 11:36 AM (3 years, 8 months ago)

So ive recently been interested in terrariums, and obviously also have a massive interest in the effects of fungi on the ecosystem.

Because of this I stumbled upon a study by Greg Watkevich of CoSEE.

The study outlined the  greenhouse effect by using terrariums to see the effect of certain pollutants. They studied the effects on gravity, radioactive decay, solar energy, internal and external energy sources etc.

This had me thinking if, say you had a large enough container, you could study the effects of your local fungi in a locally supplied terrarium (meaning to plant it with tons of local microfauna/microorganism and flora).

You could study the effects of:
- mushrooms on the ecosystem
- ecosystems effects on mushrooms
- spore dispersal
- much more I'm assuming.

There are some of the same thoughts linked below:

WHAT ARE YOUT THOUGHTS? HAS THIS BEEN DONE?

My thoughts:

1. Yes its been done. There's a thread in mush cult with subaeraginosas(lol) in a pretty little terrarium.

2. I think it's freaking awesome. I wasn't to do that with like a 20 gallon aquarium and bury a big log nocced w/ reishi or something. People told me it wouldn't work, but is clearly not the case.

I have seen some pretty cool pictures of notill weed pots with bugs crawling around in the mulch, and mushrooms growing up under the baby plants. I don't think they were put there intentionally

Actually, I should probably use a mushroom I won't want to take out, so they could just rot and go back into the soil.

3. For optimal effects, we should include also some animal life. Worms would be good for recycling nutrients through the system. We should select a mushroom that can feed on worm castings for a more sustainable system. As opposed to needing to add wood chips.

This is, obviously not going to be a sterile environment. Bacteria, and other fungi will have to coexist. We can give a selected organism a head start but once it dies, something else could take over besides its progeny. This will drastically affect your ecosystem. I guess that's what you want though, huh?

Plant a big aquarium full of moss and bugs and various greenery with a few quarts of p. Semperviva spawn mixed in. You can see the ecosystem function(and eat the fruits of a healthy functional world) and then when it dies, it's mass will likely become home to trich or something and you can watch the ecosystem evolve(or collapse). Try it with a few different species. Maybe all together. Would be cool to see how everything changes. Or how long a species(ordained by God, if you will- and given a sharp advantage)  can maintain dominance.
