You're probably right. I think that a small inner diameter (angled/bent) stainless steel straw would likely solve the angle of approach/exposure issue and perhaps slightly improve the biopsy size, but imo the best biopsy tool is a syringe.

Yea they make biopsy punches pretty small. Josex poke method is a basically a biopsy punch and that's tiny.
As far as having hands over a open dish. I won't do it. Ever. I will turn the plate sideways while punching samples then use normally.
I would use it on established clean plates while innoculating grain. Don't care much about the photo ops.

I don't think it's a fad. It's not used much in our hobby but biopsy punches are used in medical and scientific settings. I think. It is however becoming more prevalent in our hobby. Not new though.

I know broham was just putting out my thoughts on the sit. It's new to me never tried biopsy method including syringe biopsy. Figure I'll give her a shot. I might try to find a actual biopsy bunch though a reusable one not one of the sterile disposable ones. I'm not sure they even make those though.

The issue with a classic biopsy tool is that the size of the punched biopsy is too small to pick up from the plate with a scalpel, ultimately defeating the purpose.

Surgical biopsy core tools are basically syringes anyways.

I see that as more of a solution than the problem. Scalpel is not needed with a actual biopsy punch bit is with a leather punch.

Yeah that's kind of my point, might as well just use a syringe because it's ultimately the exact same thing.

I'm looking for some "deep dish" poly petri dishes. Say... 100mm x25mm deep. Has anyone seen them? I'd love to make some LI with a deep deep pour.

Amazon has 20 for like $39. Thats a bit too steep.

How about some for 30 cents a piece instead of $2.00 a piece?

Google is friend.

I will say as time goes on I like smaller wedges more and more just in general. It’s funny looking at old pictures I can see them get progressively smaller.

I’m sure they make the punches in different sizes though.

Or you could do an overlapping ven diagram punch and use the middle.

Keep in mind, if you're using your ven diagram approach to limit genetics by taking a smaller sample, you're working against yourself unless you're flaming in between punches.

It's the same problem as you'll have if you do your punches the same way D3 does.  He just does all his punches each plate at once with a single flaming of the punch before hand.  That means all the punches after the first likely have genetics from the previous punches..  Not necessarily a big deal on known clean plates, but if you're hoping to narrow down genetics on different plates...
