Anybody have their tinnitus negatively impacted from mushrooms?
    #26664788 - 05/11/20 03:32 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

So this is a question for any of you who have tinnitus.

I can't remember when I exactly got tinnitus, but I've had it for a very long time.  It's never been something that has bothered me.  I honestly don't even notice it's there when I'm awake and going about my day.  And all I need at night is a somewhat loud fan to mask it and I can get to sleep no problem.

Anyways, back in February I decided I wanted to do some mushrooms, and like most people who don't have a line on where to buy em, I decided to grow my own.  Fast forward about a month and a half and I had some B+ to trip on.

I took 2.5 grams one night and to be honest, the whole experience was underwhelming.  I just felt like I was exceptionally stoned rather than actually tripping.  I watched some nature documentaries on Netflix and as the effects began to wear off I eventually called it a night and went to bed.  At no point during the experience did I notice anything different with my tinnitus.  The same cannot be said for the next morning however.

I woke up and the ringing in my ear was significantly louder.  In fact, it was the loudest my tinnitus has ever been.  I was acutely aware of it at all moments of the day.  At night, in addition to my fan, I had to introduce a speaker playing brown noise and thunderstorm audio to help mask the ringing.
On top of that, I'm a side sleeper and couldn't lay on my right side as that would cause my right ear (which is the one affected by tinnitus) to be covered by the pillow thus blocking out any of the noise I had playing to mask the ringing (this was never an issue before the mushrooms).

This continued for 2 - 3 weeks, and then the ringing started to go down.  It continued to go down as time went on until eventually it was close in volume to what it was pre-mushrooms (still a little bit louder however).  I'm not bothered by the ringing during the day anymore and have been able to get to sleep again with only a fan running.  I'd say it took about 5 - 6 weeks to get here.

I don't believe the mushrooms actually worsened my tinnitus.  I think that the mushrooms caused my brain to become less effective at filtering out a noise which was already there.  And that my brain had to re-learn to filter out the ringing in the weeks after taking the mushrooms.  The shitty thing is that it isn't doing as good a job as it had been doing prior to taking the mushrooms.  The bright side I suppose is that even though my new baseline is louder than it was before taking the mushrooms, I have been able to habituate to it easier given that tinnitus is something I've lived with for a very long time.

Anyways, I'm curious as to whether or not anybody else out there with tinnitus has had an experience similar to mine?  I see a lot of posts online where people talk about how their tinnitus actually improved after taking mushrooms; not the other way around.  So if you're in the same boat as I am, I'd be interested in reading what you have to say.  How have you been doing since?  Did you ever take mushrooms again?  If so, what effect did these additional trips have on your tinnitus?

I haven't noticed any change in my tinnitus. I never even considered something like this can happen, sorry to hear that yours got worse. I hope there will be a cure for it one day.

I find it curious how 2,5 grams for a first timer didn't do much, my first time was 1,7 grams and I had a wonderful trip. I can't think of anything else except that you might need to get yourself into a more psychedelic headspace while tripping. If you're too anxious or something so you might reject the feelings that should come onto you naturally if you do let go, the effects are underwhelming. I think I had a few trips like that when I started.

I can't say if you should trip again or not, sounds tough having to deal with a worse tinnitus for more than a month after.

Don’t think I’ve ever gotten it from shrooms but dmt makes it scream.

Oh no, is it bad enough to ruin DMT for you? I dream of trying it some day.

I hope for a cure on day too.  Unfortunately, I don't see one being discovered in my lifetime.  The condition isn't a priority for the scientific community.  There was a company in Ireland which was exploring a new treatment option a while back, but other than that, I never find any articles about tinnitus studies and possible treatments.

This was actually the second time I've taken mushrooms.  The first time was over a decade ago.  A buddy and I split an eighth.  We also smoked some pretty potent weed as well so I never felt like I got to experience mushrooms which is why I decided to try them again.  I don't remember experiencing any ringing in my ears the next morning after my first time, although, I don't even remember if tinnitus was something I was coping with back then.  It wasn't until later in life that it either came on or worsened to the point where I was aware that I had it.  I wasn't anxious at all the second time around.  I think maybe my expectations were too high or I simply have a higher tolerance to psilocybin and psilocin.  I did experience an extremely euphoric body high, but I never had any visuals.

I've personally decided not to trip again.  I cannot explain how upsetting it was to wake up the next morning with my tinnitus being as loud as it was.  And the thought of that being my new baseline was certainly taking a toll on me mentally.  I feel very fortunate that it has returned to a level close to what it was at before tripping. It sucks because I have to forgo ever being able to experience an upper level trip (was looking forward to experiencing a level 4 or 5), but the thought of having a lasting negative effect on my tinnitus is simply too much to accept.

I have heard DMT can affect tinnitus that way.  It's interesting in that they appear to be very similar from a molecular standpoint and both a prodrug for psilocin, yet produce different effects and affect people differently.

I'm not sure if this is exactly related (as it doesn't persist after the trip), but usually, if I'm tripping hard my tinnitus does get really prominent to the point of discomfort. I also get the whooshing in my ear, but from what I understand that in particular isn't related to tinnitus but instead, blood rushing near your ear from jaw-related movement.

Ya, the "whooshing" sound is typically indicative of a vascular condition.  The sound is often times in sync with the heartbeat too.  This type of tinnitus differs greatly from your regular form in that you (and by you I mean a doctor) can typically determine what's causing it and in some cases the cause can be corrected so the whooshing sound goes away.

Now that you mention this, I also notice what you have described.

In my case I wasn't aware that I could have Tinnitus before I started exploring with psilocybin and now I'm pretty certain that I might have this condition in a mild form.

The noise is usually very marginally but when I Trip the sound becomes very dominant and hard to ignore.
That's why I always prefer to listen to music all the time.
When I take of my Headset it is at first totally silent but after a few seconds this high-pitched noise appears out of nowhere and gets louder. After some time I forget about it and my brain might filter it out but when I actively listen to nothing it comes back.

The first time I noticed that I was searching everywhere for the source of the sound but I came to the conclusion it was clearly only in my head.

It seems the loudness correspond to the magnitude of the dose.

I never talked about this with someone because I thought this is a normal side effect to It.
I even named it for myself "background noise", it is an indication for me when  shit starts to hit the Fan, from this point forward I stop doing all tasks and start chilling to music.

It is permanent present while tripping and the funny part is that I can play with it varying the pitch and frequency or such, sometime I can create music with imagination out of that sound when I'm heavy influence from the psycho actives.

Since my first Trip I can make out this noise at all times when the surrounding is quiet enough. Sometimes more, sometimes less but omnipresent.

Either I didn't notice it before or something had changed my perception permanently.

Interesting that you weren't aware of your T prior to mushrooms.  The way you talk about it though makes it seem like it doesn't bother you, which if true, is nice.  Thanks for sharing!

psychs do tend to make you much more "body-aware" - a lot of issues that you normally don't realize you don't have, or that you think are minor because you've had them so long that you've tuned them out, become more pronounced and obvious when tripping. i found this out the hard way when my back and neck issues became more severe to the point i finally saw the doctor and found out my back was completely out of alignment -a few sessions with the chiropractor set this to rights and now my back pain is waaaaaaaaaay down. also im losing weight and i found out i had insulin resistance from this chain of events, which metformin is treating now.

my health is much more improved now and improving further thanks to tripping alerting me to body issues i wasn't even aware of prior to it constantly nagging me. so it might be that you should see a ear specialist about your tinnitus if it's bugging you that much? it might be that the trip alerted you to a condition you didn't realize you had, like with me.

im saying that it might be you have a worsening condition you didn't realize until now. i knew i had back pain for years, but i didn't realize just how bad the underlying condition had gotten until the trip pointed it out to me - that's the point i was trying to make.

it might be that you should see a specialist to check and make sure everything is ok with your ears, is what im saying.

I'm not sure why you assume I haven't. I have seen both otolaryngologists and audiologists on more than one occasion over the years. There's nothing there. I have tinnitus from noise induced hearing loss.

sorry about that. i saw that you knew about it, but i didn't see you mention having seen a doctor already to check on the condition. if you've already done so, then that's that as far as that's concerned - can't really do much on the medical end (yet!).

that said, psychedelics also cause the mind to form new connections in the brain, both temporarily and permanently (in a good way, like when you're breaking out of a depressive thought loop and find a way out of it), so it wouldn't surprise me if there's a chance that some people find a way to "cure" their tinnitus by taking psychs and the trip helps them find a way to tune out the noise. you just seem to have struck it a bit unlucky in the other way, where you have become more aware of the tinnitus and are less unable to tune it out, so it seems louder. this is something that can happen with or without psychedelics too - people can be fine all their lives then suddenly they notice the buzzing noise in their ears and can't stop noticing it - which is similar to your experience it seems, where you're having a harder time filtering out the tinnitus noise than before the trip.

i couldve sworn there was some sort of biofeedback or therapy on tinnitus for reducing it, sorta like a meditation technique to help quiet the sound, or at least improve ones ability to filter it that some doctors recommended, but i can't seem to find it right now. ';.;' drat my usually excellent memory for failing me atm. i was thinking if you do trip again, it might be highly effective to try using that technique during the trip - it might prove to be extra potent then.

my own experiences with tinnitus have been temporarily increasing rining in the ears, especially during the come up, especially with oral DMT/syrian rue, but it's always gone back down afterward. maybe my tinnitus is a bit stronger now than it used to be, but considering i used to be depressed and now im not...eh, ill live. :P

on a side note, i've also had an experience once when i wish it was a bit quieter and i actually had my sense of sound disappear entirely for a few minutes. literally, no sound whatsoever. not even tinnitus. that was strange. so i wouldn't write em off as a bad job just yet... maybe they were the cause, but they might also be a cure if you play it right!

This video itself is a bit cringey but the method did work for me for a couple minutes. It's cool to experience what silence used to be like.

Tinnitus can't be cured.
It can get a little better when you take the triggers away (stress, dehydration etc) but never go away 100%. What helped me personally a little - using a white noise at night. For those who are already started to lose their hearing it is better to start thinking about hearing aids and don't wait too long until it gets even worse. In my case hearing aids staten island was very helpful.
