Is it worth it? The deeper I get into this I find myself annoyed with the SAB. If it’s not, got any tips? I got shakey hands and can’t see shit through the plastic box.

Iv been throwing rocks at my SAB ever since I built my hood. It’s hard to beat a good hood although its still a good idea to keep the SAB around for certain things.

Here’s a couple of links C10’s flow hood build Stonesun hood Pirateswazey hood Bods hood These should have most the info u need. If u have the cash and space make a big one like 2x3ft or 2x4ft you can’t go wrong with the extra space.

I think i might marry my flowhood, i want it to have my babies
Fh is so much more comfortable to work in, night and day. Contam rates down to less than 0.1% . No more back pain. Bags are waaaay easier to work with

Flow hoods are super convenient and I don't think anyone who owns one regrets it. That said I think a lot of people's problems with SABs come from working in too small boxes, or not getting creative with building them. I always wanted to make a custom shaped/sized one with plexiglass and a light wood frame, with hinges.
If you can build a box and do a little research, building one makes more sense than buying one, save a lot of money. I am on my second hood - it's pretty easy.
I do think a lot of people build bigger hoods than needed for what they do. My first hood was an 18 x 24, not big, but it was bulky. Now that I moved I don't have spare rooms, so I decided to go smaller, and build a hood that was easy to move around. So I built a 12 x 24", with a grate to protect the filter face. Anything I could do in front of a tall hood I can do with this just as comfortably, even spawn bags. What's more important is width, so you can fit more work in front of the hood at once. If I had a permanent space I'd go for 36" or wider.
It is awesome being able to move this hood around wherever.
My new hood and old one :

I built a 24x24 hood. It was a helluva project for me with little to no woodworking skills or knowledge of how to wire or even choose a fan. But now I love doing mycology. I use no oust or anything and my work is always clean. I love it!

Well, now I feel like there is no way to live without one. Thanks for the info and the links everybody. I'll share my creation once it's complete. I’m moving in the next couple weeks so it will be awhile. I’ll bump this for opinions and pointers once it begins

While I'm sure there are many factors affecting the "workable area" of a flowhood is there a generally accepted area? For example does a 24" x24" filter create a 24"x24" zone?

You'll never regret buying a flow hood and you'll never go back to using a still air box for normal myco work. Keep it for making spore prints though.

24 x 24" gives you 24 x 24" of an area to work in. 12 x 24" is typically the smallest good size people build, and honestly, you can get everything you need to get done in front of that quite comfortably. Larger hoods (particularly wider) give you more workspace obviously. You want to work as close to the filter as you can, the flow will be strongest there and reduces the likely hood of something coming in between the filter and your work as that can blow contams into your strike media. That's something you have to train yourself not to do.
Filters are easily damaged, the pins get bent and the paper tears from really slight bumps. I added a grate on my new hood and it's already proven itset to be a good addition.

How much noise do these put out while running, comparable to a box fan or vacuum cleaner?
