Coco husk, been using it due to mislabeling lol * 1
    #26675280 - 05/16/20 04:46 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

I've been using Coco husks for a while now, and I've just taken it for granted I was using coir due to it being labeled as such

It's been working great, nice to work with and cheap as fuck

But now I've ordered proper coir, funny how I've never noticed the difference in appearance from what everyone else was using, until yesterday, I blame the weed for that

Anyhow, will I be noticing a difference at all between the two?

Hehe that’s funny, although the husk probably has some good nutrition? Obviously I’m a complete noob tho.

He must mean the chips or chunks as opposed to the actual bricks that expand like soil

Even knowing the difference between the two, It didn't occur to me.

I actually had to say "fuck my pride, this is funny" to be able to post it here.

It's such a fucking obvious thing, that just went totally under my radar :tongue2:

And I actually take pride in my intelligence, so this was a total faceplant :stoned:

But if coir outperforms it, I'll be happy as a fish, because husk has been great

I went with exo-Terra Plantation Soil this time. 100 bricks is expensive as hell compared to a bale of husks tho

It’s probably all the same once it’s hydrated.

Did yours break up when it was wet?? It must’ve if you never noticed a difference from everybody else’s pictures.

They will both work, but Coir holds moisture better. You can refine Husk into Coir if you want to save money (never personally attempted).

Yeah, pretty much.
Once hydrated it broke up enough to the point where coir was filling the gaps between the chips when pressed firmly together.

Wether the chips helped or hindered, is the question really, and I'll guess well find out.

I will post my findings in this thread whenever the time comes

Yes it works fine for cubes, but will lose moisture quicker than regular coir as those large chunks don't hold onto moisture as well. I accidentally bought coco husk once and only realized when I was ready to spawn (Psilocybe tampanensis), so I just spawned it anyway and even cased with it mixed with verm and that species hated it. I scraped the coco husk casing off after it didn't fruit for almost two weeks, properly recased, then got a meager amount of fruits.

It's not the same thing, husk is chunky. But even coir isn't all the same. Since trying those 5kg blocks, I don't even want to go back to eco earth again, fibres seem way shorter, resulting in a more homogenous substrate. It's also way easier to break apart than those 650g bricks
