Flushed?
    #26674077 - 05/16/20 03:53 AM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Hi,
I'm trying to find out if this looks like a fully flushed cake? What do you do to go for round 2?

I'd pick those fully grown mushrooms, dunk it and let those pins grow out on a next flush.

What is the right process? I've read to scrape with fork and then dunk for 12 hours and roll double casing. Is that the way to go

Nah, you only roll for the first flush. I don't think anyone does the form thing anymore.

Just dunk it for 12h and you're good to go.

Scrape it with a fork if you want to fuck it up real good.
You don't re-roll cakes in vermiculite. They only get rolled once

You can dunk the cake for a couple hours or just spray it really good. Both deliver water to the cake.

Scraping was old shit info 20 years ago. What the heck are you reading. Stop it

I wish the old info on internet would get deleted. I did a cold dunk because of old info. Then this fork thing. So let's say I did the fork thing before reading your advice. How bad did I mess it up? Do you have any suggestions to recovery from this?
Man I should know all the not to do's by the end of this first go around

I was doing so well until I started to over think and decide to do some reading. This is the second time I have last minute read something and taken the wrong path. Bummer
I don't think I scraped to much. I scraped a little nothing to noticeable probably hurt it a little. Any suggestions?

So how far did I set myself back by scraping the cake a little? Should I put in chamber with my other cakes or am I asking for trouble now?
Should I case them a little since I scraped them a little?

Dude, it looks fine, it's probably fine. Don't go into full panic mode when your cake looks okay.

I just did about 30min ago. The pic you see was right before I did the dunk. Then I was getting ready to pull them out and put in chamber when I read the scrape thing

This is a pic of the dunked cakes. You can see a tiny bit of scraping on top.

Well I've never forked a cake, but I've mangled tf out of a bulk substrate while pulling it out of a tub when I was drunk af. The mangled sub pushed out another flush just fine, but it definitely didn't help. I didn't go for a 3rd, but I never do anyway.

Technically, you likely did somewhat raise the odds of the cake being overtaken by contaminants before it's time, and maybe decreasing it's overall production level a bit, but it'll probably be just fine and push out a nice little 2nd flush for you

I don't think that scraping is the worst thing in the world, so long as you are very gentle and only do it on the part of the cake that was the bottom of the jar and is now the top, for the sole purpose of getting rid of that verm later. I wouldn't personally scrape the entire cake, just the stubborn verm layer still remnant from when they were sitting in the jar for 3-5 weeks. I could totally be wrong, though. The caveat is, however, that I have NEVER mangled my substrate.

Also, even more than the fork, sometimes I simply scrape off all that leftover verm-layer shit with my fingers. My reasoning is that its easier to be a lot more gentle with your fingers, even the fingernail if your careful, than you can usually be with a fork. I also kind of gently use the pads of my finger, while the cake is being run under the faucet to get whatever leftover verm I can off the rest of the surface. Again, I think if you're mangling your substrate, even a little, you are going waaaay too hard, whether using a fork or your fingers. The key to this in my opinion is incredible patience and a very gentle hand.

Why would you scrape off the verm layer to then put a new one on there?

That's what I have read. Clean it and add a fresh layer after the dunk.
So let me just ask now then, do you not need to get it all off before the dunk like I am reading? When you birth just get the lose off vermiculite off then dunk. Then roll and fruit.

Just remove whatever falls off. Then dunk and roll.

They probably don’t need the bottom watering, especially since you just dunked them. It’s and either or I think, unless they’re sitting real long after the dunk without fruiting and just drying out. They look wet in those pictures.

I think you’re just overthinking things:) which is what a lot of people do first time. Mushroom growing is mainly about patience. Sterile tek during inoculation, then just wait. Spawn (or birth cakes), then just wait again. Occasional misting if things get dry. That’s it really.

Ok I need to stop worrying about them. Quick question why do we not let them sit directly on the perlite? I have my thoughts but

"fresh cap mushrooms" on YouTube does some great gourmet tutorials, and the dude always says scraping with a fork invigorates mycelium and induces pinning on sawdust blocks . I have two blocks of lions mane going right now. I scraped one, and left the other. They pinned at the same time. I don't see a difference really.

Bear in mind, I am very new, so my knowledge reflects that, and you should take my opinion with a grain of salt, but I can give you my reason. Its not that I don't want the verm layer on top, per se. The problem is that the verm layer is fine lining the top of the jars, with the four inoculation holes on the lids. But when I was birthing my jars, I had to ask myself, "What is this verm layer for?" The answer is its a barrier between the inoculated/colonized substrate and the air via the holes. So my hypothesis, for what its worth, is that in the 3-6 weeks of colonization and consolidation, how much crap and potential contaminants get caught in that little Verm buffer that protects the cakes? Do I really want to put that into my fruiting chamber knowing that there might be all manner of mold or other contaminants trapped in that layer? So I scrape it off, gently and carefully, and I roll the cakes in fresh verm.

Again, take my opinion on this with a grain of salt.
