Cheap High Grade Gypsum Supplier, but are they bullshit?
    #26671570 - 05/14/20 10:21 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

The SDS and ingredients says it is high grade Gypsum. But this product looks like brown sand? I washed it in a glass and quite a few hard quartz looking sediments were on the bottom.
Can i trust the manufacturer that this is real high grade Gypsum? What do you guys think? Should Gypsum this high quality be closer to off white in colour?
it costs $10 for 15kg at garden supply store.
Greater than 95% pure gypsum
less than 2% Quartz
Calcium 23%
Sulphur 18%

All natural product, no added chemicals

Edit, Photos of the sand sediment added below. (Sand was very hard to crush, unlike Gypsum crystals which should be softer) I think close to 50% of the table spoon dissolved into the water, this is a huge Fail i believe.
I have since found better bulk 15kg garden gypsum bags of which are;
- (off white garden gypsum powder)
- (brown granular balls)
Both are water soluble. Both appear to be far higher quality than the garden clay breaker brand i initially purchased. I have however decided to go with food grade brewing Gypsum for my first grow, just to be on the safe side.

i wouldnt recommend using that for growing mushrooms, you want powdered gypsum to mix in with your grain/substrate

I love Greenway Biotech, check them out. Never seen brown gypsum, even low end yard gypsum, always white.

Put some warm water, mix it, does it disolve? If it doesn't dissolve easily, pointless for grain soak

There's nothing wrong with brown gypsum

It's okay but if you can powder it further you won't waste as much and it will be more available in the substrate

"Mined from natural sources" It's just crushed selenite. You can go to the hills of Central California and pick up fist sized crystals of gypsum.

I stirred a heaping tablespoon into water, as you can see there is a lot of quarts sediment.
I strained it as i did not want hard quartz sediment cutting the kernels in the simmering pot.

The sediment was very hard and i could not easily crush it, therefore the sediment could not be gypsum crystals which are softer.

I have found other garden supply stores who sell other brands, i will try those other brands in the future.

Some garden supply brands have brown pelleted gypsum balls of which the manufacturer says is water soluble. I would trust this to be higher quality than this bag of sand looking Gypsum that i have provided photos of.
Some garden brands also have white powder Gypsum, of which i would also trust that quality more too.

I think it is unfortunate that the first brand i picked was probably rougher quality than other brands.

I have decided to go with FOOD GRADE GYPSUM from my local brewing company supplier as this is my first grow and i do not want any compromises made.

If i have success, then i will look to replace the expensive brewing gypsum ($10/kg) with some garden gypsum which should be ($10/15kg).

I have now changed over to food grade gypsum for my spawn jars and bulk substrate. I just want to make sure everything i do on my first grow is perfect, so if anything goes wrong i can more easily figure out where the problem may lie with my process.

I will upload my Tek recipe and grow in coming months.
Thanks for the tips guys i really appreciate the help.

I purchased exactly the same product, and was convinced that it was mostly sand with gypsum mixed in (there were some white clumps inside the brown granules that seemed like the gypsum I have seen before).

Now I think that maybe it was just hydrated gypsum... For the record I did use it in BRF cakes and it worked just fine as far as I could tell =/

For now I just grind up drywall and use that...

once you get established try running some jars and bulk subs without any gypsum

I don't use it ever and haven't in years

My Gypsum is brown. It dissolves in water easily. It has worked for years, even with impurities.

Yes, i am just getting established and trying to be very precise with my steps. I will experiment in the future. Some people on this message board have suggested that Gypsum Added into the bulk substrate can lead to 10 to 15% heavier yields?

I found with this brown gypsum that maybe 50% of it dissolved into the water, while the other 50% was hard sand grains that did not dissolve. Your brown gypsum sounds like its good as it all dissolves.

I think it would be okay to use in the Bulk Substrate, but the sand does not crush easily and it requires a filter strainer when pouring it into the simmering pot during grain hydration. I do not want any hard sand grains stirring around in the pot or in the grain jars.
So just to be on the safe side during my first grow I have just gone and purchased food grade brewing gypsum.
There is defiantly better quality garden gypsum brands that dissolve in water that i will look at in the future grows.

Yeah, it sounds kind of annoying. I'm not familiar with gypsum that won't dissolve. But I do know it dissolves best in cold water

Skip the gypsum and grow the shrooms naturally in an artificial tub

I'd really be surprised if you have actual quartz in your gypsum. Again, I'm pretty sure those are selenite (ie: gypsum) crystals in your sediment, and it's a shame they weren't processed finely enough to be water soluble.
