As you know, there's no rubbing alcohol to be found anywhere. Is there anything i can use in its place for sterilizing gloves/ shoeboxes/ working surfaces?

I've read that a 10% bleach solution will do the trick, think you wipe down and then let it sit for 10 mins. Still have a little iso left but will have to test out the bleach solution sooner than later.

I was surprised to find Everclear, and a variety of similar grain alcohols, at my local liquor store. At 190 proof it disinfects, fuels a sootless burner, and if so inclined, a thimbleful makes one hard Seltzer. Superior to rubbing alcohol in every way IMHO.

Depending on the proof of alcohol you buy you can dilute it to 70% with water using a dilution calculator, get more out of the expensive alcohol....and 70% sanitizes better because it doesn't evaporate as fast

You can always ask someone that works in the pharmacy when they will be getting more in stock. At mine the lady told me when their truck comes in, but sometimes it brings alcohol sometimes it doesn’t.
I’ve only been able to find one bottle since this whole thing went down. When I found it the entire shelf was stocked, limit 1 per customer, and was all gone next day. Gotta ask what day and what time they restock

I recently tired Ever clear and I don’t think I’ll ever go back to isopropyl. Works better for cleaning the rig and nail too .

Curious whyre your sanitizing shoeboxes and gloves?
Alcohol sanitizes NOT sterilizes
If your spawn is clean you should be fine to just rinse out your shoebox with some soapy water and then rinse with clean water or throw it in the dishwashing cycle if it can withstand the heat
Honestly I haven't used gloves in awhile with fine success, lots of TC's been using dry SAB's with no gloves for awhile with no issues, technique is key

I got the last two cans of denatured alcohol from my local hardware store but I have since found 70 and 91 the last few times at the chain drug store. I’d trade for an ATL#7. lol

Everclear works good when diluted to about 70%. I recently bought a couple of gallons of 100% food grade non-denatured ethanol and I’ll be diluting that to 70% also. I haven’t used it yet but it should pretty much be the same as using everclear.

You can also use a one-two punch of hydrogen peroxide and vinegar. Spray the surface with either peroxide or vinegar first, and then after a minute, wipe it down. Then, spray with the other and wipe it down again.
I would always use a wet glove box. The liquid on the sides will help to draw and hold solids (contaminants) in place until your work is done.
I disagree strongly with advice against full sterile procedure. It matters little what an experienced grower can pull off with technique, because people asking questions here are usually not experienced or trusted cultivators. What matters is what 'all of us' can do with a little cleaning and sanitation. RR

Had an egg soaking in a cup of vinegar in my garage for the last 7 days. I got to clean it off the driveway when it failed to bounce from a 3’ fall. Thanks quaranteachers.

You can get half gallons of 70% iso off ebay for cheaper by volume than everclear though

Washing with soap and warm water should be more than enough. You can try bleach or hydrogen peroxide, bleach is probably cheaper. I've always sprayed water with bleach on the sides of my SAB, I know a lot of people just use soapy water but having the bleach in there just gives me peace of mind. Also, while alcohol is hard to find now, you shouldn't have problems finding cleaning products with disinfectant in them. It's usually chlorine based disinfectants, they work very well too.

I dont know man. I guess maybe I go overboard. As RR stated, im not an advanced mycologist or anything. The shoebox tek I use stated to wipe them down with iso even after washing them with soap and water, before adding spawn. I wear a tyvek suit, hoodie, face mask, and gloves all the time, whether its MS innoc, just g2g, or just spawning. I usually reapply the iso to my gloves in between jars/boxes. May not be necessary but I havent had many contams either.

The only thing necessary to do when spawning is to have a relatively clean shoebox. Meaning no visible debris. Spawning is done in open air with non-sterile materials. It won't contam unless you had dirty spawn or you made some shitty nutritious bulk sub with coffee or sth. Doesn't matter how advanced you are. You're basically cleaning yourself to work with dirty materials.

Well thats great to know! Thanks! So if a hair from your arm fell in the sub when spawning that wouldnt compromise things?

No. It could be an issue if you were using a tub that's visibly dirty tho. Especially if it's dirty from grain water or sth nutritious. The goal here is to not have anything inside that could be a germination spot for nasties. But contam spores are expected to be everywhere when you spawn.

that's way overkill man, idk why clean rooms and tyvek suits are becoming a thing again
I'm usually in agreeance with RR but I gotta disagree on this one, running a dry SAB can be a great way to test how sterile your procedure is and the save valuable iso, obviously get good practice first before diving into a dry SAB but I've used a dry SAB and no gloves for awhile now with no issues except when I get to stoned and rush things multiple TC's and regulars have played with the idea with success
You can literally sneeze or spit on your spawn and if its clean it will be fine
