First time Oysters
    #26670122 - 05/14/20 07:07 AM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Hi!

So I'm an experienced cultivators of different species of magic mushrooms.
I'm proficient in agar work, I can produce very clean grain spawn, pasteurize straw etc. Gonna start on straw.

Have a couple noon questions:

It's spring heading into summer, NY area. I was thinking Blue Osyters , do they do well outside in warmer temperatures?

I was thinking buckets, I own a propane burner so maybe some logs in poly bags.
Oysters don't need much spawn , yes? I mostly see spawning proportions listed by weight, roughly how many quarts would I need per bucket? Or for large logs?
Do you layer it or mix it all up?

And lastly I just fruit these outside after the spawn run? Or just straight outside after spawning?

Thanks folks!

Blues are not the best oyster for the temps you'll have.  I'm in Maine so not that different.  Blues WILL grow in warmer temps but the fruit quality is much better when colder.  I'd go with phoenix oysters or something like that.

Buckets work great.  I used to use 2 quarts of spawn per 5 gallon bucket, but one would probably work fine with straw (I used HWFP).  Mix it all in, don't layer.

One tip:

Before you fill your bucket with your substrate/spawn mix, line it with a plastic trash bag.  Stuff everything in there real tight.  Then cut little x's through the plastic liner where all the holes in your bucket are, and you can throw it outside then.  The liner with x's cut will keep the substrate from drying out near where the holes are, and also make for easier cleanup at the end.

Good luck

Thank you! Glad I asked.

HWFP? I don't know that abbreviation yet

HWFP = Hardwood fuel pellets.

Yeah hardwood fuel pellets are great.  Straw is awesome and actually probably better for oysters, I just like the ease of prep for fuel pellets!

How do you prep the pellets? Sterilize them?

Thanks for that link! I had been wondering where I was gonna find sawdust haha. I'm very new to edibles.

I have plenty of spawn bags and an impulse sealer, killer.

This method confused me at first because it's boiling water and above pasteurization temps but I saw a comment by Lipa
"This method works because the pellets are pre-pasteurized during the process of making them."
Still I would think the boiling temps would partially sterilize it.

If I wanted to use supplemented sawdust then it would need to be sterilized and spawned in front of a flow hood , correct?

Correct, if you supplement at all you'll need to sterilize and flow hood spawn.

Yeah the faux-pasteurization thing is an odd one, but it sure works!  Everything in my gallery was done that way.  I think it's mostly the fact that most edible species tend to be more aggressive than others, but I'm really not sure, cause like you said it's not technically pasteurization or sterilization really

I don't suggest it but you could use a still airbox instead of a flow hood. I am just putting all the options out there.

You totally can, but I can speak from experience, after doing it once you won't want to do it again, ever

Trying to get into and back out of a filter patch bag inside a SAB without messing anything up is a nightmare LOL!
