Supplementing substrate vs higher spawn rate
    #26672814 - 05/15/20 02:57 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

I'm looking to get some opinions from more experienced cultivators on the topic of using a supplement (bran, soy hull pellets, ect) mixed with hwfp and water in polypropylene bags that are then sterelized and inoculated in sterile conditions with a lower spawn rate (5%) versus just hwfp with water then packing polyethylene tubing and inoculation in open air, clean conditions with a higher spawn rate (20%).

The benefits of the latter as I seen them are not having to sterelize as much total volume (more grain, but no substrate), cheaper bags, space saving (can create long logs vs a bunch of shelving), don't need as big of a sterelize.

The benefits of the sterelization as I see them are lower contams rates, use less grain spawn that costs more per lb then bran or soy hull pellets and higher yield.

Please correct me if I'm wrong and fill in anything I've missed.

If anyone has done experiments and made a comparison I'd love to hear it. Especially yield, contam rates, time saved doing one method over the other, ect

Also are there any species that require sterelization and supplementation?

You pretty much covered all the pros and cons as correctly as I know them, although I'm pretty much a hobbyist and haven't grown in any serious volume, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

But I've always found it incredibly easier to do the higher spawn rate method, just because of what a giant pain it is to sterilize bags, and spawn in sterile conditions.

But if you've got a sizeable steam sterilizer and a big enough flow hood, you're probably going to wanna go with a cheaper supplement than all that grain, as the cost difference will be more significant the more volume you're doing.

So if you ask me, it depends mostly on the volume you're looking to grow, how much time you have, and the equipment you have available or want to build.

Also some species, like king oysters, require so much supplementation you really need to use bran or comparable and sterilize, you just can't do it with a high spawn rate really.

Hope that helps, maybe someone that does more volume can help more!
