Tumbleweed/dead grass tub 1

My backyard is overgrown with tall dead grass and the occasional tumbleweed.

I’m bored so I decided to try and use it as sub. Never used straw or anything before so I skimmed some prep stuff and decided to break it into smaller pieces then soak it in a bucket with boiling water for a couple hours.
I used a weed whacker and stuck it in the bucket and i might as well have put a bomb in there. If anybody ever does this cover the top.
Anyway I’m waiting for the water to boil now. I’m just gonna make a small sub and use maybe a third of a quart of spawn to see how it does.

Somebody said they were thinking about doing this the other day I forgot who though.
Man this stuff stinks when it gets in the hot water, I mean surprised how much it smells like real hay.

Alright here goes. No cleaning or anything, pulled it out of the ground into the bucket and added boiling water then let it sit for a couple hours. Squeezed it out some as I put it in, hopefully there’s enough water.

I just spawned another ufo shoebox and used the chunk stuck in the bottom of the jar to mix in.
I did it in like four layers and packed it down each time.

This is gonna be good!
Do another batch but soak it down after the chop and add Dawn dish soap to break down the putter layer. It will colonize faster that way.
Basically treat it like straw.
Can't wait to see how this turns out!

I was gonna do the soap thing but...didn’t.
Ufo really isn’t the best choice for a jar grow but i didn’t want to wait a day for amazon to be ready lol.
If this works it’ll be sweet, free sub. I’m the shitty neighbor who doesn’t mow the lawn until the code inspector comes and threatens to fine me. This way I’ll have a use for all the long ass grass I cut down every other month.

The Oak Mulch and Pine mulch actually worked. But I haven't updated the journal entry in a while. I want to do grass, but it's back to work full time with reduced pay.
I kinda hope the enconomy completely collapses because of corporations. Fucking people make me sick. Some one call Tyler durden its time to reset the debt record.

lol I was just telling somebody when this is over walmart and amazon will be the only businesses left.
I mean it’s been heading that way forever but this hit the warp drive on the process.
It made me so happy this morning when I read about the hacker crew extorting trump. Especially cuz they wanted 21 million and whoever was dealing with them only gave them like 300k so now they doubled it to 42 mil.
I reaallly hope they pay it and then the guys release it anyway cuz trumps a piece of shit hiding all kinds of stuff while running his mouth.
That would make my year. Paying that much would be incriminating in itself but it’s enough that they could retire and still burn him without consequence.

Looking good! This makes me want to go get a block of straw and grow cubes like I use to grow Oysters. I saw someone doing oysters on coir recently.

I've grown cubes on straight straw in the past, and mixed it into coir. Got some good flushes.
You don't want to just pour boiling water in though, you need to pasteurize properly. Needs to be kept between 140 + 160 for 60 - 90 min max. At those temps the harmful bacteria will die but the beneficial bacteria that can withstand a bit higher temperature will survive. If you use boiling water you risk killing the good bacteria off and partially sterilizing your substrate. I use a bucket and pour in water at about 175 F. It will cool to pasteurization temps quickly and should hold for an hour, if it drops too low I just add more water. If using straw I soak overnight first with a little dishsoap (like what you use for a load of dishes) and then drain before pasteurizing. It's also good to add hydrated lime , tho I forget how much I used.
Excited to see how this turns out!

Yeah I should’ve chopped it up more, I wasn’t planning on using a jar initially.
I’m pretty surprised how well this is doing. Five days and about 90% colonized. Everything seems fine so far.

Is there a show called tumbleweed?
When I made this I was considering dropping something heavy ontop to keep it all compressed. It hasn’t expanded as much as I was afraid it would but I still kinda think it could’ve helped.
My first ufo shoebox has one pin today, day 18, so I hope this one pins faster.
This is pretty cool I’ve got tons of this stuff in the yard and didn’t clean it or anything, and it looks like it’s got enough water which was my main concern. I’ll probably try running king oyster on a bunch of it next.

Amazon tub cuz I’m too lazy to erase the code for it.
I started misting the sides of the jar and I’m leaving the band with a tyvek circle in it screwed on so it should get plenty of air.

It’s really grown in thick, starting to get knots all over.

So far it seems to be keeping the same timeframe as the shoeboxes.

I should’ve picked a faster culture for this
My shoeboxes have been pinning around day 20.
The myc has really thickened up. Whole thing looks like this.

I’m not seeing any knots on the surface though so idk what’s gonna happen. Probably I’ll be picking UFOs outta the bottom.

Yeah I figured I’d just mist it once in a while and see what happens.
Now that I know it works i gotta try a shoebox and an oyster log.

Well unfortunately it seems to have the beginning of mold forming on the uncolonized pieces of straw sticking up.
I think this whole thing proved what I was after though, that it’s possible to do with random grass.
If i had prepped it the right way and used a normal variety I think it would’ve been fine.

Yep cubes apparently will grow on pretty much anything.
To bad it molded. I ran into a lot of that during covid experiment 2020. But I did get fruits off of the pine mulch!
