Modifying Flow hood from 277v to 120v?
    #26672522 - 05/15/20 11:59 AM (3 years, 8 months ago)

I have no electrical knowledge whatsoever. I am lookin at a fan filter unit that is 277v.

About how much should it run me to have it converted to 120v? What parts would I need? Cost if I hired somebody to do it?

Do I need a step down convertor?

In this case technically you'd need a "step up" transformer from 120v to 277v. I have no idea how much those run/availability. I'm an HVAC technician by trade but that's just not a scenario I've ever ran into.

You could also hypothetically replace the motor with a 120v motor. As for how much that would cost it would depend on the specs (HP and RPM) of the existing motor. But if it were something rather standard and readily available it's possible a motor could be had for around $100, but if it's something wonky it could be much more expensive.

Replacing the motor could be achieved by someone that's at least a little bit handy. Paying a professional to do it likely wouldn't be worth it unless you had a buddy.

As for the transformer (again, no clue on cost or availability here), it would be pretty easy and straight forward to wire up, you would just need to make sure it's mounted safely and such.

Curious on the particular unit you're looking at, have a link? If it were me I'd just be trying to track down a 120v unit for the sake of simplicity.

If your fan or whatever needs 277 and your source is 120, then you need a step-up transformer.  Just make sure the VA rating on the transformer is as high or higher than what your fan needs.

Something like this would do

You need a 120v to 277v step up transformer. Not a step down one.
They're about 150 dollars on the shit brand side of things. If its under 100 dollars it's a step down. You want one rated for probably at least 500W(Va)
