Farm System Reform Act

Elizabeth Warren has joined Senator Cory Booker to co-sponsor a bill "to put an end to factory farming". It appears Warren decided to co-sponsor the bill in part because of the COVID-19 incidents in the meatpacking industry.
In the US, 90-99% of the food is produced on large farms. To even consider eliminating large farms is hilarious. Using the word "factory" farms is intended to maximize outrage. Such loaded rhetoric helps fuel the flames. The human desire to demonize is tenacious. Remember in the 70's when big oil was evil? There are always new targets to hate . . .

I guess you don't know too much about factory farms? Try doing a search "factory farms undercover".
Though I agree factory farms would be extremely difficult to eliminate, they nonetheless deserve to be demonized.
-------------------- I am in a minority on the shroomery, as I frequently defend the opposing side when they have a point about something or when my side make believes something about them. I also attack my side if I think they're wrong. People here get very confused by that and think it means I prefer the other side.

As someone who has worked in ag most of my life, I know something about food production. The people running large farms producing our food aren't robots - they are people and families. The term "factory farms" is plain stupid. I agree - there are big improvements that can be and should be made in this sector - and many other areas of society.
The Farm System Reform Act provides a peek into a big agenda that has nothing to do with reform. Notice it is not change they want - but to eliminate this evil force. As long as we demonize and call some industries names (such as "evil") we should not expect change. But I suspect many people who demonize really don't actually want change - they prefer to demonize. It's like a hobby.

Big oil is still evil as is the increasing centralized ownership of farms. It’s not hard to understand.
-------------------- Enjoy the process of your search without succumbing to the pressure of the result. A Dorito is pizza, change my mind. Bank and Union with The Shroomery at the Zuul on The internet - now with %'s and things I’m sorry it had to be me.

Projection is such an interesting defense mechanism.
Factory farming is often cruel, a large contributor to carbon emissions, and a breeding ground for new disease. I'm not as knowledgeable about the beef industry, but poultry is basically a monopoly and pretty much a hellish trap of debt for many chicken coop owners.
It'd be in almost everyone's best interest to change the landscape. Get smaller, more sustainable, and certainly more local farms producing food. Imagine if France was importing all of it's beef from Portugal, geographically that's not much different than what we have going on.
It'd mean higher food prices and the need for government to subsidize tons of small farms, so it's basically never going to happen. There's no question that it's something that should be looked into though.
