Hey guys . I am just entering the world of picking and really excited about this . recently moced to a place where there rae loads around .
this might be a rookie question but trying to take every precaution I can and learn the most I can .
So I went today to my spot and noticed a lot of sub were starting to go a bit black which I had not noticed yesterday and was quite sure they weren't that color . I posted photos of them below
Does that mean they are getting bad ? why do they turn black ? Do I have to be worried ?
I hope someone enlightens me on these matters .

You should wait a bit for those pins to mature before you pick them. And use scissors. Oxidation of psilocin is what makes active mushrooms turn blue and eventually black. This will lead to potency loss, but usually only minimal. They're still good to consume.

Hello there
Thanks for the quick reply .
Yeah am aware of that these were on the floor already . Always use a scissor was one of the first things I learned .
so Basically they start turning back because their losing their potency ?does that mean that they are ready? I saw some black that they were still on the ground growing , would they be ready to pcik them up if they are already turning black ?

Ideally, a the mushroom shouldn't be blue, green or black. Oxidation (break down) of psychoactive alkaloids isn't something you want. I don't see any black ones in your photo, but those are very blue. Black usually means "maybe too far gone). Colouration isn't an indicator for harvest time. Just wait for them to mature.

It's ok to get the pins that are black on the cap, they will abort anyway and the pins are as potent as mature fruit if not more so. I strongly recommend using scissors to harvest mushrooms in Australia and New Zealand because of a destructive fungi called Phytophythora cinnamomi, it's spread by disturbing the soil.

There are plenty of reasons why one would harvest pins, primarily as Doc said, if you suspect they will abort soon

Definitely should wait until they open up and start dropping spores, but if the caps are turning black then they will not reach maturity and should be harvested.

Thanks guys for the Replies ..
So from what i understand its perfectly safe to eat them and the thing that turns them back is the phytophythora thing and its doesnt mean they are not edible .

Yes, they're fine for consumption. No, it's the oxidation of psilocin that makes them turn blue and black. This happens with too much handling, getting banged about, heavy rain etc. Phytophythora cinnamomi is a parasitic fungus that kills trees.
