Beginner Second Flush - Black Mold!?
    #26669930 - 05/14/20 03:28 AM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Hey guys, so I recently harvested my first flush from a fresh mushroom grow kit from Zamnesia (it came fully inoculated) I took spores from the first flush and am planning to continue growing them with the PF Tek. Before continuing with that I wanted to make complete use of the kit so I went for a second flush. I removed all the aborts and small pins before filling the box with filtered water and let it soak for about 10hours. It was going fine until I noticed something black on top of the cake. It doesn’t look like any of the bruising I’ve seen on the first flush. I know for a fact it is not bruising because I did a q-tip test (a technique i read about somewhere). It basically says that when you dab the spot with a q-tip it shouldn’t leave any coloration if its bruising. This is not the case as you can see from the photos.
I tried recognising it based on the pinned contamination thread but to no avail. Please help!

Looks kinda like pin aborts to me but could be black mold.

Some of the small dots which have the same coloration could very well be aborts. I remember I noticed some I hadn’t picked when I was starting the second flush. But I don’t remember this black spot being there or at the very least, being that big. I noticed it immediately when I went to check on them today.

Yeah, I had a bunch of those, too, and to make sure they weren't mold, I carefully scooped them out of my terrariums. The only difference being that I used all BRF cakes. I would try to carefully separate that matter from the rest of your fruiting medium, maybe get a little plate or bowl, trying not to spill even the crumbs onto the rest of your media. Just in case there is some mold in there, you don't want to seed it to the clean areas. When I took some stuff that looked like that off one or two of my cakes, I also looked at it with a magnifying glass, to see what my eyes told me. They were basically all miss-shaped, contorted micro-pins that just never got off the ground, for one reason or another. The only thing I don't like in your pics is that there appears to be a greenish tint to the black. This could be nothing more than the weirdness of cell phone cameras, though.

I scooped it and since I’ve never witnessed mould before I’m not sure how to tell its not mould. Judging off of my intuition - it looks like bruising on an abort. From what I read in the big contam thread bruising can turn black if its more extreme. It does look like aborted matter but im not really sure.
The saddest part is this spot was so close to some of the pins that I eneded up damaging the one that was leading the race... I’m so sad/mad.

How do I monitor further? Do you guys have any tips on how to detect if it is indeed mould by observing how the cake develops?

Molds typically have a powdery, matté look to them (flat, no shine), sorta like velvet.

If u think your cakes have mold, I recommend isolating them in a seperate Fruiting Chamber. Even a gallon sized plastic baggie can work for this.

Based on your description, this is most likely not mould. On closer inspection it just looks like mycelium that has turned black. No powdery, or matte look to them.
I guess I ruined that beautiful pin for nothing... But better be safe than sorry I guess.

Thanks for the help guys!
