OVERLAY!
    #2666992 - 05/12/04 01:42 AM (20 years, 8 months ago)

HI GUYS! I NEED HELP ASAP! I have a casing that has overlayed pretty bad... So Far, I deep scratched, and then dunked it...Should I put it back into the incubation area, Or straight into the Birthing Chamber??? Its been into incubation for 1 night, since dunking and I can already see a little bit of mycelium recovering... Please Help! Thanks!

I think... once you see it is recovering (YAY) you can fruit it again... but I also don't mind overlay too much... cubes do fine with overlay... aren't cakes overlay?

For what it's worth, in this example, one guy suggested I cold shock overnight in the fridge...

...a tray that just kept vegetatively growing and growing (as per pics ^above) in what as a shocker heatwave last summer (see temp below)....

...it worked, and I at least made some prints to retain the strain.

Since you've deep scratched, expect it to take a week longer (to recover). I'd place it back to the fruiting terrarium.

Do you have a pic. Overlay is not the big problem it's made out to be. A lot of people that think they have it don't.

Agreed. Deep scratching it really is unnecessary, and can cause additional problems. When you scratch you can introduce contamination, and you can potentially lower your yields also. When you scratch you are removing layers of mycelium that act as nutrient pipelines to the surface where hyphal aggregates are forming (the beginning of pins). When you remove these "nutrient stores", you are putting a hamper on the fruiting process.

I would consider this a heavy case of overlay:

With a little additional casing layer applied to the surface, it fruited fine.

IMO, scratching in not necessary for Cubensis, and does more harm than good. Once you see new growth, add a new casing layer and place in the fruiter.
