Agar to Book (A2B?) RR style
    #26669279 - 05/13/20 07:41 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Sup everyone

This CoViD shit is getting ridiculous so i came back to the hobby and just got into agar (holy shit i was asleep on the agar)! now... we play around cause i have infinite amounts of propagate-able myc WOOT!
Todays journey?
Ever since i saw RR's pic

Floating around the Novelty Grows post, i've wanted to give it a shot. Now albiet that im not a Christian and dont actively practice so i dont have a use for a bible sitting around. and im also no roger rabbit, but i do have a little sister who just so happens to have the full twilight series (I know disgusting but i hope it doesnt translate into the shroomies lol). And i do have the time to waste...

Sooo here we go!
i took a couple almost fully colonized plates (had a bit of mold germinating on the bottom of the plate somehow, prepped my agar wrong for sure.)
dissected le' book (ft. my foot )

soaked le book and squeezed to, you know... "field capacity" :lolsy:
tried my best to scrape the myc off the top of the agar puck to avoid grabbing to moldy bois and put it in the books hollow.

Closed the book put it in a bag slightly cracked and put it under my 6500k bulb

I'll keep yall updated, i seriously thing this is going to turn out to be a mold book but hey it will be a fun experiment :P Trying to followin RR's footsteps is proving to be interesting! (even though idk how he did it i can only assume)

Also is keeping it in the slightly cracked bag the move to build up CO2 right? then once i see it myc up (if it does) fruit er. I'm pretty sure i have a general idea of what's going on but please if you see me doing anything completely wrong inform me as always shroom fam <3

I'm clearly still not 100% sure what to do with those plates that are ok (not these ones but u know what i mean) but not good enough for grain, and it'd break my heart to just throw it in the land fill. it fights that mold outside it can fight it in my books LMFAO (Im just joking)

Sounds like appropriate use for that caliber of literature.

You really shouldn't use a contaminated plate, especially with mold. The point of agar is to be able to transfer clean myc away from contams to a new plate, as many times as needed until the culture is clean .

The book isn't sterile though, dunno how this is gonna turn out man

Indeed! These were plates i was going to just wash out and start new anyway cause i needed more mini rounds to continure doing my transfers away from these plates. So i didnt see a giant problem in at least trying. I know ideally youd do it with clean plates or use these plates to transfer from but idid that already and the way the mold germinated on these plates i was trapped on the underside of the agar puck so i dont think it allowed the spores to contam the whole plate as it didnt move from the underside in a considerable amount of time waited and the myc continued to grow out, i could be so wrong though. We'll see. Fuck it anyway if it goes green ill just put it in the other house or outside hehe.

Plates kinda looked like those ones, weird mold on the bottom instead of the top of the puck?

Like you said the book wasnt clean anyway so something going to germinate along the way was my thought process why do you need 100% clean spawn at that point. Maybe if i pasturized the book but thats too much work now isnt it :crazy2:

Get a paper-back copy, wet it down, roll it up, pop it into one of those extra large Mason jars - the 1.5qt, PC for about an hr, toss in agar: BAM all you gotta do is pry it out and fruit in a SGFC.
I'd add gypsum to the water used to soak the book, I'd even try to get it to absorb say Malt Extract or BRF. You could bind it with rope to keep it snug together to make it easier to retrieve.

Damnit now i have to actually PC a fucking book for science  :bestcry:

I was just thinking maybe they need a little extra newts, some malt i think would get up in them pages alright.

This seems to fun to not have a few books going, maybe give them to friends so they can "increase their knowledge"  :inlove3:

I'm def going to continue this experiment. I need a real tub going though damnit XD

Cmon transfer plates grow!

I'm literally getting things ready to do this - If you can't PC a book for science then I will.

I've got to find out if Yarn or any other kind of binding will survive a pressure cook.
OR
I could cover the book in tin foil after its been wet to field capacity and PC it for say 45min.

I wonder what you could soak the book in besides water? Maybe a LME solution like you would use for liquid culture. Then pop the book in a spawn bag, sterilize it, and inoculate.

I think it should, but not 100% certain. The first thing my brain thought of was zip ties but i bet those might melt, and even if they didnt im sure plastic at high heat is no no. Twine yarn, rubber bands maybe? maybe same problem as zip ties lol.

Worse comes to worst we'll just braid our pubes and use them.

Sorry im stoned af :crazy2:

There isn't much science in this. But why not - for fun..
But choose the book right. Some books deserves this more than others.
Like this Tax Laws of Finland I once had..

I forgot about spawn bags, however I have none around - I will would like to figure out a good way to use this 1.5qt jar.
What about Micropore tape? I remember forgetting to remove some from my lids and it was just fine.

Does the book have to be made of a certain material or are all old paper books useable?

Yeah something like grain water sounds decent!

Much better than plain ol water you know?

What about dipping the whole book in LC lmfao. that'd be a waste of LC for sure but i can only imagine.

Also spawn bag instead of jar? hello? you're actually a genius. forget that big qt jar and having to tie it up!
