A few questions about APEs * 1
    #26667827 - 05/13/20 01:45 AM (4 years, 8 months ago)

1st time growing APEs and wondering if I could get some input.

confirmed that they are taking longer to fruit - like 2 more weeks than a typical cube. Pins are finally coming up though.

this fisrt flush is TINY!:mushroomtwirl:

anyone have experience as to :

when to harvest?

does the second flush get bigger?

Ive been treating them like regular cubes, but do they need any special attention- more OR less humidity? FAE? different substrate?(these are on rye+coir/verm -- planning the next one on oats+coir/verm)

Tiny fruits is indicative of overly hydrated substrates (not always but generally Ime) also your sub surface is not very level try spending more time spawning and try to level the surface out as evenly as you can that helps a lot in creating optimal surface conditions.

Aw, they're so adorable :awebig:

Your substrate looks pretty dry. How often are u misting it?

Thanks for the replies Mateah and LogicaL Chaos -

I think they are in a pretty appropriate micro-climate, the moisture & humidity seems comparable to other cubes I've cultivated. I think it may just be genetics.

anyone know when the optimal time to harvest is? since there's not a traditional veil and they are so different looking it's hard to tell. One source says when the caps turn blue, another says when the cap starts to peel back ...

here is another pic I just took - just sprayed them down so ignore the extra moisture...

from my understanding I'm should harvest #2, #3, and probably #5?
sound good?

I assume another flush is going to come in and they'll be bigger - typically how it goes. usually cubes don't mature this small - and definitely not this weird

I’m not sure about ape but with normal PE they get soft when they’re done.

That surface is looking a little rough. When mine got matted like that it was usually from getting it too wet then letting it dry out. It seems like once it happens the first time the myc doesn’t hold water as well and it just gets worse and worse.

I think that is what is happening to one of my tubs. Whenever I mist, I can't seem to get the water droplets to stay on the surface. It just looks like there's a layer of nail polish that's glistening after I mist. And then it dries up within a few hours. Do you know if I should continue to mist when it dries up or should I leave it alone? I'm in the stage where pins are starting to grow.

So when this kind of thing happens to me, it did recently when I took a trip to cali for some... stuff.
I would soak my tub in some distilled water for a good couple hours.
I wouldn't do no 24hr soak, just enough to rejuvenate the myc so it heals.
After which I'd begin regular misting. Not saying this is the proper path because you've got pins - just giving my process.

good advice - still dialing in the ideal substrate conditions, but I'm getting some pretty good results. the main question was about when to harvest the APE's - detecting whether they are getting soft ( as your experience with PE ) might be good indicator to go by.
