Breaking up/Shaking Spawn Bags more than once?
    #26668391 - 05/13/20 10:27 AM (3 years, 8 months ago)

I have two spawn bags, I've had many successful grows. At about 20% I shook the bags. One has definitely cultivated much more and has clumps all over the other has fewer, but has cultivated more clumps. The growth is not spreading as quickly as I am used to or as I had hoped though. Is it too risky to break up the spawn and mix it up a bit? I'm used to just one shake and mix up, I don't want to potentially damage the bags. It's been about a week if not more since I shook them.

How was the speed of growth on both bags before the first shake? And did you use spores to inoculate or agar/lc?
Possibly contams or just slow mycelium, I wouldn't shake them more than once it just adds more work for the mycelium (to recover) and adds stress.

Gotta be a reason it's going so slow, upload some pics if you can

No there's no risk.

But if you're in a hurry, and really got to go
If you're in a hurry, might have to find out slow
That it's one thing to try and another to fly
You get there quicker just a step at a time
It's one thing to bark, another to bite
The show ain't over till you pack up at night

Its good practice to shake spawn as little as possible since it takes a bit of extra energy for it to recolonize, but you can shake it more than once.

Also, if spawn is hard to break up into individual grains it might mean that it is contaminated.

Just go and shake it one more time. If there's a contam, it will probably show up after that shake. If there isn't, you might save yourself a few days.

IMO, the only reason not to shake multiple times is because it's faster. It takes a day or two for myc to recover before you get further colonisation going.

It is APE... so there's also that. When I said 20% I might have been being a little generous. I may have shaken it a little early.

IME, a well-timed shake can speed things up. Particularly in A2G jars. Instead of one "center" from which the myc can expand, you get multiple. You gain more than loose.
