I found this 1966 quarter in changer recently. Do you remember how this gimmick was used "back in the day"?

You nailed it! Back in the day you could giggle a quarter on a string and trigger extra game credits on a pin ball or video game. In the 90's I learned how to cheat the coin op washers and driers in the ghetto apartment where're I lived. When you live in the ghetto, your neighbors will shame and scorn you - and laugh at you - if you actually spend money to do wash.

I meant to type "jiggle" - when I noticed the mistake in the post, I liked it enough not to edit it.

Eventually the pinball machine manufactures added a one-way lever to the credit trigger mechanism, so the “coin on a string” trick didn't work anymore. BTW, I showed this to a couple magician friends of mine, and they used such a coin as a kid to make it disappear - by tying one end of a rubber band to the coin and the other end to a safety pin that's up your sleeve (the classic "pull"). One of the first magic tricks I saw as a kid on the schoolyard was a friend who would hold a paperclip at the tip of his fingers and then suddenly make it disappear - using an elastic pull.

The classic Mortal Kombat arcade cabinets had a switch that you could hit to bypass vs screens and make speed runs faster.

I don't think so. Unless you maybe stumble onto an old vintage machine.

Way cool, I guess this is a piece of scammer history now. I wonder if there's a modern version of this

There are specific Button mash combos on certain vending machines still work to give 3-9 beverages for the price of one.
