For maximum growth you could slice into 3 and plant them, the cut ends will pup and the tip will grow. You’ll be delayed with two of the cuttings while they develop rootballs but then they’ll take off, then you just rinse and repeat every grow season or two. In a few years you have a bunch growing.
Maximum areas of growth, you know. 2 8inch cacti will grow twice as much as 1 16inch for the most part.

Yes it is active, but not as strong as many other Pachanois. The appearance gives it away. This link has good info on what to look for:

So say with the cactus in picture,
Cut it in half and let each end dry? They new half (not in pot) put into a new pot and let it grow?

That would work. With the base end it’s always a flip of a coin how many pups you get so you could get two or three growing from it.

Do you think this in picture is big/tall enough to be cut into 3rds?

Hard to tell it’s size from a pic. How long is it? Cuttings need to be about 5 inches in my opinion, I’m not sure on how short you could actually go.

We have P williamsii available at a local nursery. Not cheap but the specimens I've seen are surrounded by loads of buttons.
Might have to invest in one soon.

You should be able to get three then. When I take cuttings I put a fan on low and let it blow on the open cuts for a few hours and you can see it start to seal up. I think that helps create a barrier to keep infection out, and then I let them sit and callous for a few weeks before planting. I also rub down and let dry my knife blade with rubbing alcohol to make sure it’s sterile.
Anytime you take a cutting it delays growth for a little while since it has to grow a new root ball but once they get that going their growth will take off. So next year, the ones you planted this year will go full steam, etc. The base you have will take off without much delay. They all tend to have their own timeframe for pupping. Some don’t waste time while others seem to sit there forever.

Would you folks, particularly the OP, mind if I chime in here and ask, how in the hell are you guys finding nurseries/garden-stores with San Pedros? Is it just luck? I don't even know what to look for, but I would LOVE to score a big San Pedro and not pay the higher prices that site sponsors charge for cuttings. Problem is I live in NY City and have no idea what to even look for. I have never seen one up close, or at least not seen it and known it was a San Pedro, if I did ever see one. I went to a garden store the other day for some vermiculite, and saw a crapload of cacti, but I guess I have to learn how to identify this bad boy. Also, to be honest, I'm thinking that living in NY City may not be a good way to score one at the retail level? lol

If I'm being completely honest the best way I can describe it is just by repeating what I was once told. When it is ready it will find you. In my opinion (please others chime in) it is totally down to luck. I am not exaggerating when I tell you that two separate nurseries, within probably a 30 mile radius of me, have about 12 of them combined at the moment. However, I've never seen one in my life, in person, before this spring. So its hit or miss, and again, imo, they decided to find me.
In terms of what to look for. Study the OP pictures. Look up photos. Really learn what to look for. This link is useful https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/10507252/fpart/all/vc/1 but I would disagree slightly on one aspect. I believe all san pedro at local stores are going to have atleast some phlsychoactive effect. This is often debated.
Anyway, goodluck and please ask more questions!
