    #26656060 - 05/07/20 09:10 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Mycena? Found near rotting wood directly after a rainy day (subsided rain). Dead twigs and leaves. In nebraska.

The pics won’t enlarge for me but the dark stipe and white gills make me think Gymnopus

I’ve seen Mycetinis like this before. I wonder if it has an odor.

could be that. could be Marasmius. or Marasmiellus. kinda looks like tetrapyrgos nigripes but the reddishness of the stipe is wrong

Totally feel you! I need a setup eventually to run more tests with. Any recommendations for taking "the next step" in mushroom identification then just books? Thanks

it's not Tetrapyrgos, I think it is Marasmius or something similar like that.

Marasmius cohaerens maybe?

Wrong region but this site has been really helpful in narrowing down IDs.

Investing in a scope and becoming familiar with it is a big step. It’s an investment but it’s invaluable if you want to really get into it. It also kind of forces learning in that you have to learn if you want to know what it is that you’re looking at.

Some say a microscope, some say DNA sequencing... me, personally, I like a mushroom to keep its mystique if I can’t ID it without involving outside measures. only way I see that changing is if I ever find an unknown Psilocybe.

And once I have that, I would make a spore print, then put that print under the scope? And what so I look for then?

I have a bunch of books but more because I just like collecting them, really everything I’ve ever needed was online.
