Hello hello Just introducing myself to the other tassie pickers! Would love to see some of you out and about... It's my first season picking and I think I am already getting obsessed as I can longer go for a run without stopping every 5 metres to examine the earth haha. Loving looking at everyone's beautiful finds and learning as I go!!

Pretty pumped to share this find... although not a MASSIVE haul, was good to finally find some of these beauties.
Was just about to lose motivation and call it a day too and then bang, up they popped 😄😄😄

Finally had success yesterday, found around 4 grams dried worth of mushrooms, mostly on a moist grassy hill next to a major road. 240 metres elevation / Southern Tasmania. They love open hills with bracken and leaf litter i've found. Around 60% I found were small and many are still pins (which I did not pick).

Went for a walk today and checked out the places I used to back in the day. Kunanyi/Mt Wellington, waterworks etc. Unfortunately the waterworks patch I used to have the most success at had been properly cleared. Many footprints off the main trails as well. I heard that on Sunday, the area had a lot of people looking. Like 30 people apparently.
Ran into some young guys, saw them picking frantically through the scrub and thought shit, they've found a huge patch. Kept walking and ran into another one of the guys. The one I talked to had an American accent I think. He said they hadn't been picking before but people told them to come up and just start picking (I think he even said "and eating"). I said it's not that simple and asked to check his ziplock. Various species in there but no actives. I showed him what a sub looked like, told him not to do what they've been doing, and said don't touch the slimy ones. Also said I wouldn't use those bags any more either.
A bit worrying, for both their health and the ecology of the area.
Waterworks was my old hunting ground during the 90's. I would start looking early March to get on top of the rhythm of the season. There would always come a point mid-April where people started trashing spots all up through that valley, leaving rubbish, crushing mycelium, turning over any old mushroom. It got really frustrating.

One of the reasons I stopped picking there was that exact reason. First few times I'd find a couple a dozen per walk, but eventually tapered off to nothing over the years. It felt as though too many people had found out about it and had no respect for the area. Keen to find more local places to go and get back into the rhythm

Some cute, chunky babies I found in a little patch today, I was blown away by that colour intensity and the mycelium!

Super chuffed with our haul today. Finally got the chance to get out and about in some better areas and after a while of looking in eucalypt forests, southern Tas at around 340m elevation, we found a big patch spread throughout a roughly 10×10 area. To people without luck yet, just keep looking and hopefully you'll find the jackpot like we did today, because they're clearly out there! Approx 14 grams dry but unfortunately couldn't get them absolutely cracker dry but you do what you can , they're still pretty snappy.

Nice finds Chuck them in a container with some DampRid or other desiccant (make sure it doesn't touch the mushrooms as you don't want to be ingesting any form of desiccant), seal it up and check in a week or so. If they were dry enough to begin with, they should now be cracker dry. If you notice the desiccant has clumped together or looks moist, carefully replace it with a new batch, making sure the container is dry before refilling.
With an air-tight seal, a layer of fresh desiccant and a cool dark space they should keep for years

Hello Jonk40581
Go through past active threads (Tas/Vic/Sa/Nsw/Wa) (Around 2010 - 2015) and read every post and look at every Image, this will help you learn a lot
