So yours is 2ft wide and that is enough space for you to work comfortably?

Im innoculating with agar. sometimes grain to grain.

2 foot wide is good. I can G2G about 8 quarts in front of mine, before putting on lids and bringing more up to be wiped down. 12 is tall enough for G2G for me. If I did bags I would want a 24x24

I was using the 5 qt bags in a SAB but it became difficult using larger bags.

I agree that bags are more suited for flow hoods yes. But you should still be able to work with them in an SAB just fine - if you don't have enough space you just need a bigger SAB, or tilt the bag (I'm working bags in front of a 12 x 24).

Not owning a flow hood is not the reason for OP's contamination issues.

shape kinda

I think the SAB I have is just not big enough. What type of contamination rates are you guys dealing with? I am aware the flow hood will not eliminate contam if my grain prep is not on point.

I usually always loose some bags, but I am still pretty new to this. Just got the 75x sterilizer it makes my life much easier.

A bigger SAB would make working with bags a whole lot easier. Typically if you are seeing bacteria or mold in your grain spawn, it's either your inoculant , or the contams are being introduced when you inoculate/G2G.

When I work with bags, even in front of the flow hood, I prefer to first inoculate quart grain masters with agar, and then G2G those into 4 or 5 qt bags (for a total of 5-6qts, one bag per tub).

Oh yeah definitely. If you have the money and a permanent space then a wider hood is really nice if you do a whole lot of work. But I can get anything I need done in front of this quite comfortably.
Even RR did all of his work in front of a 12 x 24

I would definitely like the larger setup, similar to smartattack's setup. Im going  to use it in a small sealed room.

My SAB is definitely not tall enough, as the 18" tall bags hit the top of the SAB.

I worked with them in front of my 18" tall hood, and now in front of 12" tall.
You should check out RR's Lets grow mushrooms videos, the one with spawn bags especially - he runs a gourmet mushroom farm using a 12 x 24" hood. It will work the same way with a still air box.  You angle the bags instead of opening them straight up tall.

I’ve also been running spawn bags for years on my 12 x 24”.
Just need to put them on their sides

:whathesaid:

Alternatively, and I've seen other members do this and I have is well , is set the FH on a table with drawer underneath (or a stool). You open the bag in the flow and set the bottom half in the drawer or on the stool. This way you have have it vertical to inoculate. The bottom half doesn't need to be in the flow so long as you keep the top several inches in it.

So the manufacturer says they tested the air flow from this filter at 90FPM up to 30" From the filter.
Does this mean that the clean working space up to 30" Out from the face of the filter?

Should I get a stainless steel table for working in front of the flow hood? Does the type of table make any difference?
I was thinking about 30"x48" steel table, and a shelf behind it to hold the filter.

Im going with a fan Filter unit 4'x2' Brand new and has a Prefilter.
I was considering using some clear acrylic to build walls and a top extending from the filter. Is there any recommendation on a specific material that may be better to use?

Id suggest the following personally:

Don't work 30" away, I see no need for that.

Any cleanable surface will be good. If you got munjoy, spend on stainless I guess. Otherwise that formica laminated MDF is great and can be cut easily at home.

Clear acrylic (plexiglass) < Lexan

You want to work as close to the filter as possible so you get the best flow and more importantly nothing comes between the filter face and your work (gloves especially) because it can blow contams right into your sterile media. Just use whatever table will hold it and gives you a foot or so in front. I like to use a piece of glass or plexiglass down on the table so it's easy to sanitizer.

You would want the table to be at least as wide as your filter , yes
