I need to buy a Flow Hood! HELP.
    #26663427 - 05/10/20 09:46 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

So I am new to the flow hood thing, and I am not sure what type of flow hood or filter I should get. Also who is the best supplier for something like this?

I have seen some that are reasonably priced on alibaba, but I have no clue if these are the correct type of flow hoods to use.

On Ebay there are these Hepa fan/filters, I think they might be the right kind, would this type of filter work for mycology?
https://www.ebay.com/itm/HEPA-Fan-Filter-Ceiling-Grid-Unit-24-X-48-Clean-Room-277v/283844259161?hash=item42166fad59:g:ujQAAOSwQ3Jd0YSq

I like the idea of a 4ft filter for a much larger working area. Bags are getting contaminated and its probably because I dont have a flow hood.

Im just not sure if the filter is the correct type, or correct fan.

This dude says they are good on this website, the one I linked to on ebay seems very similar. Check out his huge filter setup its pretty interesting.

That guy sells mushroom supplies for a living he probably knows more than I do. I think I'm gona go for it. Are you gona grab one or do the multiple filter thing? I think 1 will be enough for now. I suppose 2 might be better?

I'm also not sure what speed to run this thing at, it has 3 speeds.  The max is around 500cfm

Im convinced I would have way less bags that go bad if I used a flow hood/filter. I was at around 30% loss on bags, I got it down to maybe 15-20% of the bags that I am loosing to contam.  The glove box is just driving me nuts, and not fun when youre using 5qt bags!

I did a lot of looking into those FFU units and what I found is there
are ones that do have a true laminar flow. But it's not the cheap ones.
It has to be one of the nicer ones and they get up to about the $800 range.
Those cheaper ones are just not designed with as nice of a plenum behind
them to give even air flow across the surface. That being said what it really
comes down to with those is the room in which you use them. If you have a
sealed room and you let that thing run for a cpl hours to reduce the air
particle count down to nothing in the room then it will maybe work just
fine anyhow.

I would assume that they are safe to use that myctyson site seems legit

I will be using a fairly small sealed, clean room. 4ft x 8ft.
What type of flow hood do you have dude?

I thought about buying a 48" wide Hepa Filter, fan, and build my own? I just dont know how to choose the appropriate filter.

Here is the filter alone, no fan, 48" around $500 shipped. I dont mind spending a little more, if something like this is a better solution.

I have the series one flowhood from fungi perfecti but I bought it years
ago when they were only $500. Their website has one of the nice FFUs on there
too but they want over a grand for it. There's websites where you can buy
FFUs factory direct and have them custom made with all the options you
want like a HULA or whatever filter instead of HEPA which filters down to
two microns instead of three. And they give way more specs on the CFMs and
everything.

These whisper flows that you can customize are the ones I'm looking at
but again I'm not %100 sure on their laminar flow but you can see they have
a large plenum box on the back and they're not cheap

But if you go through and choose the options and add the nicer filter
they come to almost $900 which is still great for a 2'×4' flowhood. And
talk about the special baffles in them to create uniform laminar flow
across the surface of the filter. Where as the cheaper units don't specifically
say they do that.

You can go to fungi perfecti and they have filters and fans that go together. I got my filter and fan there 12x24 for $450 and built the box myself. All together you out one together for less than $500.

Thanks for the info guys.

So would this filter in the link be any better than the previous one i linked to that was $375 on ebay? This is the envirco brand, I just cant seem to figure out what the difference is between the two other than one has a higher CFM.

I considered one of those at one point in time. The overall design kind of put me off, not to mention the price and the fact that they NEVER seem to show a picture of the business end of the unit.

"I like the idea of a 4ft filter for a much larger working area. Bags are getting contaminated and its probably because I dont have a flow hood."

A flow hood is convenient to work in front of, but it is not going to solve your contamination problems. You should be able to work in a still box contamination free before building a hood.

What are you inoculating your bags with?

I buy my filters of Fungi Perfecti. They are a little more expensive but good filters. I wouldn't suggest buying a blower from them, they over priced.

The extra work space is very convienent, but you can do most anything in front of a small hood quite comfortably- even big spawn bags.
I see lots of people building way bigger flow hoods than they really need for the amount of work they are doing. It's just something to think about when building a hood.

I actually just built a smaller hood (in my sig) - I built it so I can move it around , added a grate to the front to protect it. My older hood is in the screenshot below.

IDK, I feel it's a bit different with bags. Bags are way more suited for flowhoods than for SABs.
