Hey guys! Just wondering how long it takes to regrow subs in a spot previously picked.. say last week? I have the ones a good tap before picking them and we had some decent rain on the mornington peninsula this weekend.

One of my little hunting locations is in the middle of an area being logged for pine trees. Went there today and found this patch on the edge of where they have logged too. There’s a few small pins in here but in a week it will all be destroyed so I took all I could get

With my two previous season inner suburb patches being destroyed by eager people over harvesting and the other council poisoning, had to go out and find a new patch; at least until my North-East patch comes alive later this month.
Even after 6 seasons under my belt it took just under 3 hours and was no easy task. Whew. Reminded me of my first season where it took probably 15-20 hours of searching until I finally found the spiritual gems. Does seem to make it all the more special working for final reward.. defineteky enjoyed the day despite only finding a family of 5, picking the two mature and then coming back to give the mycellium and other mid sized a helping hand with 15L of water which will hopefully pay dividends in return.
For those still searching maybe these pictures of inactives may help, as they mean, in my experience, you're on the right trail..

And now my first season subs! Apologies should work on my photography a touch for such a occasion.

Keep up the good work guys, looking forward to the rainfall and lower temps this week! Fingers crossed

Re Exterior7
..Difficult to say but if we are talking good conditions e.g. 5-15deg Celsius and preferably on average for each 24h a minimum of 2-3mm of rainfall, I'd say 3-5 days. If it's more like 5-14deg's and 5-15mm rainfall/day 48 hours definetely gives them time to grow to maturity in my experience. Remember, some subs are different to others and constant rain, not down pours are preferable in general. Hope that helps but you'll find out soon enough checking on your patch.

Anybody know what's going on here? is this genetic, or environmental influence?

I think the splitting occurs if there is a dry period followed by rain. So the smaller mushroom dries out slightly, and then begins growing at a faster rate due to the rain. The growth at the middle of the cap is faster than that of the margins, so the strain causes them to split. I found a few like this yesterday, which was wet following a few dry days. Maybe when the opposite weather pattern occurs, you get the really wavy caps? Just my hypothesis.

That is super impressive finding a completely new place in such a short period of time! You thought about writing a guide or some such to share your hunting knowledge?

Hoping for some more extended periods of rain soon! My local patch hasn't fruited since it stopped raining last week, I checked today and the substrate was super dry and even the L. ceres that were seemingly everywhere have disappeared too.

New to everything, just had this ID'd by Obtuse (I don't know how to link/highlight the user's name). But have been researching and hunting and waiting and just picked these guys this morning by a nearby creek
The Id'er suggested the long little guy bottom left may be Psathyrella sp. but that they others are subs. Exciting! Ready to find out the next easiest to ID now!
Grateful for this site and its users. So much helpful info.

Been a lurker in these forums for a while, this is only my second season of hunting subs and have started off pretty well for myself. I got a pretty big flush from one of the spots I have found after all the big rains we got, but have only found smaller ones as of recent since lack of constant rain.

I woke up early today and went hunting. Whilst waiting for the train I hunted around my train station and found four subs
Then I traveled to a few of my areas. The second and third were the best. Here are photos from the second area... Was really good to see many more subs than the previous year.....

After a slow start I've had some good hunts, no huge bagfuls on any given hunt but mainly consistent finds. There's only been one hunt where I came back with nothing so I went out again that afternoon and made up for it. I've been hunting most days and have bought back at least a handful every time, usually half a paper lunch bag.
I tossed a batch because I wasn't 100% (dark cap colour) and it turned out they were good, albeit waterlogged. Wasn't aware of these forums and the capacity for others to ID.
Found two very good, healthy patches in exposed areas today. First ones I've seen this season that weren't growing in protected/sheltered areas so the season seems to be nicely underway now.

They weren't dry, that photo was the evening and I'd picked them in the morning, and the table light is quite yellow I guess. This is the same batch today now that they're quite dry, with my nasty kitchen fluoro light. Does that look more normal?
