Microwaving soil
    #26662892 - 05/10/20 06:01 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

I have some seedlings that are growing but some mold or algae has bloomed on the soil. How long is it safe to microwave the soil without killing the bites? Would 3 minutes be bad?

Do not microwave at all. The seedlings will be the first to die since water absorbs microwaves. Three minutes will outright boil the dirt. Don't do any microwaving at all.

If its algea then its fine, if its mold, air it out and give it a little more UV light but don't nuke the seedlings. I don't microwave soil anymore at all, even for starting seeds, it kills everything and having healthy soil for cactus seeds is a much better approach.

It probably wouldn't even take 5 seconds in a microwave to kill every single seedling.

Repot them into a new tray if the mold is killing them. I've repotted several trays with a fine instrument and it doesn't hurt them.

Microwaving isn't inherently bad but it works in uneven ways and you should only pasteurize soil never sterilize it, but it is just hard to guard that distinction with something so spotty like microwaving.

It should be fine if you do it carefully in steps and mix it up and all that, to even everything out and if you either use a core thermometer too or have some tek that serves as a proxy cause someone else tested it well before.

So it can work but it is risky. Boiling temps for soil can generate toxicity because certain compounds get released too much. I guess in between pasteurization and sterilization can mean the bacteria etc left alive have to battle the ones coming in from the air and you will have to see what happens and if they can still protect the soil like pasteurized soil does.

I have never microwaved soil and never had an issue. My buddy who microwaves routinely has issues. A little algea won't hurt anything. Ive got dozens of containers with thousands of seedlings going right now and many have algae and are soing just fine. Aclimate them to sunlight as quickly as possible and it'll help. Just do it carefully!
