First time grower
    #26618443 - 04/21/20 06:35 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

So this is my first time growing. I am hoping for some input on how to proceed.

I am doing the classic PF Tek. After noccing 24 jars I eventually realized I had used half litre jars, not the half pint jars that the tek calls for. 15 showed signs of life, 10 have big blooms of mycelium, and 3 are just exploding with white growth.

I now have the proper size 250ml jars. I have a pressure cooker. I have made an SAB. I have agar. I have 5 multispore syringes. I plan on noccing 12 jars of BRF following the PF Tek and fruiting my BRF cakes in shoeboxes inside a tub. Put spores from syringe on agar, isolate and transfer. Once I have good myc growing on agar I will nocc WBS in 500 ml jars by directly putting the agar wedges on top of the WBS. I will fruit using a substrate of coco coir, verm, and gypsum inside monotubs and shoeboxes. Once I have fruits I will make spore prints, some of which will be stored and some of which will be used to isolate via agar.

I know I'm getting ahead of myself here as I haven't actually grown any fruits yet, but nonetheless I am excited to map out my strategy going forward.

Any pitfalls, shortcuts, teks that might help, all advice is appreciated.

I just want to grow mushrooms guys. Eating the mushroom makes you want to grow the mushroom, the symbiosis is a driving force.

Welcome to the forum!!!
Sounds like you've got a good handle on things.
Don't forget once you have some fruit growing you can clone sterile
flesh from the inside stem of a big boi in a cluster onto agar.

My 500ml jars are filling up very nicely now. I had several jars that began to bloom but then stalled. I couldn't find any info about doing this anywhere, and probably for good reason, but I decided to pull out a chunk of mycelium and put it directly on agar. 2 days later the chunk of mycelium has exploded into a fuzzy white ball and is beginning to creep across the agar.

Has anyone else done this with aborted / stalled jars? Just tear out a piece of the myc and put it directly on agar?

I've got about 40 250ml jars nocced up now. I have some in a cupboard doing very well. The rest I've put back in the cardboard pack they came in and put them directly on top of my fridge (no cupboard there.)

Now I'm planning my next steps. I plan on making a SGFC with perlite and putting some cakes in there. I also plan on making a few shoeboxes and shredding up a couple cakes to try that way.

While my cakes are incubating I am reading up about what to do with all this WBS I bought and playing around with agar. I haven't had any luck with spores from a syringe directly onto agar yet, keep getting pink contams.

A lot of times stalled jars are because of the ability of air to get into them.  What do your lids look like?  Also, stacking your jars like that probably isn't going to help with the air exchange if you are covering up the hole in the lid that's for air to pass through.

My lids are basic PF Tek lids, some with 4 holes some with 2. No filters or SHIPs.

I only put 2 holes in about half of them because I intend to reuse them with WBS after the cakes are birthed. At that time I will make "proper" lids with SHIPs and filters.

The next two dozen jars 250 ml jars I put back in the cardboard sleeve, covered with another piece of cardboard and just put them on top of my fridge. I don't think having the jars stacked is blocking the holes but I figured I would try it this way to see which works best.

Do you guys have any luck just putting a drop or two of spore solution onto agar? I've been trying to get my agar mix/procedures right but haven't had any luck with straight spore solution. I have managed to grow several dishes of pink stuff and some mold from scraping various places around my apartment and putting it on agar.

Ya, they don't need a lot of air, was more interested to see if you might say there were *no* holes in the lids.  But if you have holes of some sort, I'd think you would be good on that.  What's the temperature?  Can you think of anything that's changed with the environment when they started to stall?  How's moisture look in the jars up close?

And yes to agar... Assume all spore syringes are contaminated, so you will almost always grow something more than just mycelium.  But even if you have a plate of bacterial boogers (you will always see bacteria before mycelium), let the spores germinate and transfer some mycelium to a new plate... rinse and repeat until you have a plate without contamination.

I've got 8 500 ml jars that are looking great, just taking some time but coming along.

I realized as I was cleaning out my "stalled" jars that some of them were growing inside where I couldn't see and doing just fine. Lesson learned, be more patient.

Chunks of growing myc I pulled from the jars I thought had stalled. Put a few pieces directly on agar and they are looking great. I'm going to use these to do my first agar to agar transfer.

I was given the advice to cut those big 500ml cakes in half lengthwise and fruit them as two separate cakes. Keep in mind I'm a first timer, but it would seem to me that the myc would expend a lot of energy repairing the damage instead of spending that energy making fruits. Any thoughts?

As it's my first time, I want to follow the tek and make a SGFC. I also am going to make some shoeboxes and a monotub while my other jars are colonizing. I want to see what works best for me and since I have several dozen jars that are colonizing well I figure I should try out a few different fruiting chambers.

I've got three chunks of myc I put directly on agar that are growing like crazy. I plan on isolating those and eventually get enough good agar growth to go directly onto WBS. I planned on doing the tiger drop before I knew it had a name

I hope some of you elders out there remember the giddiness you had when you started out. I am so excited I just read about growing all day then go to bed dreaming about growing.

For a first timer is a SGFC still the best way to go? I know there are pros and cons, and I've read about many different types of modified FCs. I'm going to start making my fruiting chamber soon and am planning on doing the SGFC as that's what the tek calls for. I also know there are endless ways of making FCs and I see people say that SGFCs are no longer considered the best way to fruit cakes as it dries out too quickly. Just want to give myself the best chance for a successful grow . I also don't mind misting and fanning, I'm working from home and have plenty of time on my hands.

On a side note, I got one of the last bags of vermiculite at the store. The clerk said their supplier has run out as there is a shortage of vermiculite. I'm glad I got a couple of bags. Now if only I had got some iso before it all ran out

DONT CUT THEM IN HALF! U will get huge fruits if you fruit it as a full pint cake. (sorry for yelling )

Just an update. Yes you can colonize 500ml jars, even on your first try.

A few more weeks and these monster cakes will be ready.

Also got lots of little 250 ml jars going on, different brand of brf and verm but things are looking good so far.

Those look good. Give em that 5 days to consolidate.
I recommend a traditional SGFC for cakes with the whole
4-5" thick layer of wet perlite, the I think 1/4" drill bit holes every 2
inches on all 6 sides. Set it on some pvc rings or whatever for feet.
Then it's easy cause you just keep that perlite as wet as it can be and the
holes do all the work.

Well guys thanks to all the input here I finally have succeeded. Grew my first fruit today. Time to blast off!

For real tho, I've got two jars that started pinning overnight. I know in vitro pinning generally indicates either a contam or not enough FAE. One jar is 100% colonized (I was going to give it a week to consolidate) and the other is about 90% colonized.

Also it has been between 82-85 degrees inside my apt, is it possible the high temps caused the early pinning?

What would y'all do, put the pinning cakes in a SGFC, mix them up with coco coir to make shoeboxes, or just grow them in the jar?
