I had snakes growing up. The snake for beginners -- the garter snake who ate goldfish (lol), and a ball python.

I was fascinated with snakes as a kid and used to actively go looking for them.

But jeezus dude, reticulated pythons are some monsters, man.

Longest snake on earth aren't they?

Dope snake, looks like you’re raising it well.  I had a Sulawesi yellow head retic back in the day that grew the fastest of any snake I’d ever raised before, it was ridiculous.  It also seemed to be more intelligent than your average snake as well.  It’s probably the size of a telephone pole by now..

Are you familiar with the imperator/constrictor, “true red tail” debacle?

I adopted one of those way back in the day when she was about 3 feet long and got her to the size yours is.  She would eat 10lb rabbits.  I DO NOT ADVISE THIS, but I got permission from the apartment complex I was living in to keep snakes and converted a bedroom into a place for her to stay.  I had to “child safety” everything but she had a whole room to herself and really seemed to enjoy looking out the window.

Gosh red tailed boas are so beautiful. I wanted one really bad when I was a kid.

If I got a boa I'd want either a red tailed or an emerald tree boa.

I’ve wanted to set up a live set up for emerald tree boas, all live plants etc and then hang it by chain from the ceiling so it sort of ‘floats’ at eye level.  It’s one of those projects I never get to but “one day” it would be nice to knock out.  Emerald tree boas are awesome.

I’m a real big fan of reptiles so when the topic comes up I tend to ramble on.

I'm only somewhat familiar, both subspecies are called red-tailed boas where I am located, but maybe it's the constrictor sub-species that is supposed to be the red-tailed boa?

Her tail color has faded significantly to a copper color but it was more red and vibrant when she was younger, as expected.

She doesn't eat anything close to 10 lbs rabbits but she easily could down one. I feed her humongous rats, biggest I can find.

Been thinking about raising rabbits for the both of us since I don't live in the sticks anymore.

Edit:  Why wouldn't you advise having a reptile room if you are keeping a big snake?

Because a person would have to be responsible enough to not allow it to get out and make contact with the neighbors.  A locking cage would be what is ‘most responsible’.  It’s just a matter of one bad apple making everyone look bad, which tends to happen in the reptile world.  A big snake like that brings with it a responsibility and you have a zero failure allowance between them and neighbors who didn’t ask to take on that responsibility.  You know how it goes.

You’re probably better off with a few jumbo rats as opposed to one giant rabbit.  I knew some breeders who would have old rabbits that weren’t breeder age anymore and knew what I was doing with them.  They were feeder rabbits so I wasn’t getting them from the pet store or anything, they were going to be food one way or another.  It’s a pretty big meal though for a boa.

Every bedroom door in every house I have ever been in has a lock though, how does a cage that locks end up being more responsible if the snake never leaves the room without supervision?

I have an enclosure for my boa but I mostly let her roam free in my bedroom when I am home. Often I let her roam free in the bedroom when I am not home, even though most of the time she just finds a hiding spot and explores maybe 10% of the time.  My biggest fear is not her getting out and hurting a person or another pet, but my roommates' half German shepherd getting in and fucking her up.

I am pretty sure if my snake did escape that she would be killed within 30 minutes of someone finding her because people generally suck and are seriously cowards when it comes to our scaly friends.

Probably at least 20 people have threatened to kill my Morgaine if they see her. My snake is not even a threat to a newborn baby if she was starving

Snakes are escape artists, they..uh...find a way.  There was a news story back in the day of a guy that put is albino burmese python in the bathroom for awhile and it managed to get the window open and push out the screen and got away.  That’s bad press.  I don’t know if they ever found it.

I’m not doubting a snake in a room, I’m doubting people’s ability to keep it in that room.  That’s cool if you can do it, we need more people like that in the world.  For your average joe though, a locking ‘escape proof’ cage is the safest way to go.  That’s all I’m saying, I’m not on a soap box or anything.

Ah, gotcha.  Snakes can be curious and are quite strong so if they are in an environment they can escape they will, given enough time. Not my room though, she can't break the door down.

With a Burmese python or retic I could see some worry, but my boa can and has been handled by children with no issue.  If she ever escaped she would be in so much danger from any human or dog that saw her, she just wouldn't likely survive long enough to do any minimal harm she could do

When I was a kid we had a 16ft albino Burmese. She was a beauty.

Just yesterday I was thinking about getting another. There are so many bad ass morphs nowadays.... still no albino green anacondas tho

To answer patlal, I fed mine pigeons. About 15-20 once a month.  We kept pigeons just for this

Its dependent on age and size of the snake. Typically an appropriate sized rat at first once a week. As the snake gets older and bigger it changes to every other week. it might move on to rabbits and only eat once a month as it becomes an adult.

my vote is

Gaboon viper

Look at how fat that thing is

It's built like a long snake tank and has (I think) the longest fangs of any snake in the world

Around 40-50

We basically built a cage around some pigeonholes then put a couple entry/exit holes in the cage near the top and nowhere else. That way the adults could leave and come back as they wanted, but the fledglings couldn't.

Love gaboon vipers. They have (If I'm remembering correctly) some of if not the largest fangs of and 2 types of venom. There is a YouTube channel vipeekeeper. Very informative and a huge venomous collection
