I do my jars with micropore tape, I make an X with tape over the hole (1 hole, 3/8 inch punched with a leather puncher, works great), PC with foil over the lid as usual, then when noccing jars (g2g, spores on grain, or LC syringe) I tap the tape with alcohol on a paper towel, then use another paper towel to pat dry, then put another piece of tape going between the X<(Here) so there' kind of 3 layers all going different directions. Only time I've been getting contams is from using contamed starting material, definitely no issues with MP on the holes.

Has anyone found a reusable lid cover that stays reusable, like a plastic cover of some sort? Is there any 3D Printable plastic that can be PC'd?

What about that modeling clay (Sculptee?) molded to the top, just brainstorming here.

What kind of lid cover are you talking about? Like a cover for the PC run?

Best lid design I've ever used. Highly recommend doing them like this

OP - what are you using these jars for, grain spawn?

1. The injection port is completely unnecessary. You should be doing all inoculations in a still air box.
Open the lid to inoculate.

2. If you need the injection port because you are inoculating grains with a spore syringe , stop. You should really only inoculate grains with a clean culture on agar. If the injection port is for injecting liquid culture in, just unscrew the lid and pour or squirt the LC in.

3. The best lids for grain spawn are Synthetic Filter Discs or polyfill.
Since you aren't using Mason jars, I assume you have the one piece metal or plastic lids.
These are perfect for polyfill. Just drill your GE hole and stuff tightly with polyfill.

4. Yes, you need to cover the lids with foil during your PC run.

This is what I use - I get those autoclavable plastic lids for spawn jars from mycology suppliers, they are dirt cheap and never warp. I think they are better than the plastic Mason jar lids, which are really only meant for storage.
I drill a hole in the center and pop the SFD right up under the lid.
I also will use polyfill. These plastic lids are perfect for that, the 2 piece Mason jar metal band and lid are a pain to hold together.

Here is an example (this is actually a gallon spawn jar, that's why it has 3 holes instead of one. Drilling can crack the lids, so I prefer to heat up the back of a drill bit with a propane torch and punch a hole thru

Just had an idea. Bring back the syringe lock-on-lid idea, install into the lid and use only LC with a syringe. That way you have a interface that doesnt wear out like other syringe-poking ideas.

Just drill a hole in the middle of the lid. Stuff with pilyfill or mp tape. Then you can inject through the polypill or tape. With the tape make sure to put another piece over the top after injecting. Look into agar. Little extra time much better chances.

For filters I cut squares using a scalpel out of this roll of "beading felt" I got at the Fabric store. Haven't lost a jar yet.

It's basically polyfil that's been flattened by heat. Stiffer than fuck and a square meter of it cost me $11 so I'll probably never run out.

Why not just open the lid?

I used to cut out circles of white Kraft felt (basically the same stuff), which I would pinch between the metal lid and band, over the GE hole. It is nice because it holds the lid and band together.

But these days I've found it's better to go with plastic lid with polyfill

Not sure if clay can be PC'd at high temp+moisture.

Yea, instead of aluminum foil that gets tossed after a few runs (or if you're wasteful like me recycled every run).

Ah! Every run is indeed a lot o foil. I will use them basically forever but I definitely wouldn’t mind a cheap, but quality slip on type cover.

SFDs...perfection. Nothing beats a micron filter for your jar.

I use good old polyfil. When I first started growing, I would just shoot grain jar up by poking flame steriilzed needle thru the polyfil and squirt 2 ccs to each jar.

Now I do agar and LI only. Just lift the lid and pour LI in, easy and have no contams as of yet.

+1 on the craft felt
I'm still making use of the first 30x30cm sheet I bought, and the first set of lids I made in 2016.
Reusable with or without the injection port.

Idk if this is allowed but this place has these awesome adhesive sfd’s that work beautifully

As far as syringe inoculation ports....I inoculate with agar wedges or g2g so my lids only have one hole for ge. ?‍♂️

Those are pretty damn cool. They look a little thin are they? Also how well does the adhesive hold up does it shift while hot?

Sorry for the late response but they are kinda thin but I’ve reused the lids I made with them 3 times so far. I’d say they work better than mp tape but I’ve never used mp tape as a filtered lid. I’m a huge tyvek fan too. I’d never go through the trouble of stuffing polyfil in my lids lol. But these things work well and if someone is “lazy” I’d say it’s their best route. GL

It's all good I may have to give them a try I'd never heard of them before you posted the link.
