Want a new truck to travel/camp in... need advice * 1
    #26662162 - 05/10/20 11:12 AM (3 years, 9 months ago)

So I am not a car person at all, I bought a new Carolla a few years back and love the thing but I have a job I need to get to in the winters and this past winter I realized how sketchy driving a carolla to and from work in snow is.

I have been thinking for a while how cool it would be to buy a truck, put a cap on the truck bed, throw a mattress and shit in it and travel around the country camping and stuff.  I don't know anything about vehicles though.  My budget is 40k max.

I was thinking of sticking with Toyota and wanted to look at their Tacoma and Tundra, but my friend keeps telling me F150 because it's cheaper and a better vehicle.

It looks like people have done the camping stuff in pretty much every type of truck available but does anyone here have experience with this or own a truck they recommend?

Thanks.

Toyotas are legit. I would go with a Toyota Tundra or Tacoma myself.

Also maybe consider a nice SUV like the Toyota 4-Runner. U could convert into a nice sleeper by removing the rear seats.

i actually did a lot of research into this exact idea a few years back. Shit i still think about it often.

After all my research of Truck with topper vs Cargo van, the cargo van always won. it won due to simplicity, standing space, having assess to the rear from the drivers seat. running wires, creator comforts, privacy, security.

Things to keep in mind are, heating/cooling (insulation), changing clothes and cleaning up, cooking options, Parking overnight, Personal Security, wiring for creature comforts, storage of personal items.

I would start researching down that path. When i was in europe i feel like i saw tons of Vans but limited trucks, might be better for parts and pricing also!

Hope these keep you busy!

I considered the van option but wouldnt deck it out like these videos anyways because one of my goals is to be able to buy an ATV and I cant transport an atv if I deck the van out like in these vids.  Leaning really hard toward an F150, will be going tomorrow to check them out although I dunno if dealerships are even operating as usual due to the 'Rona

Are you going to do a trailer camper or maybe one of those roof-top tent campers?

F150 is legit if you like the standard truck look. Any Toyota is a good choice really.

The new Canyons/Colorados are awesome, Ford also has new rangers that look pretty sweet. I like the mid size trucks myself because they are easier to get around in but still provide all the perks of a full sized truck. The mid sized trucks are going to be way better on gas mileage too, that will save you a lot of money in the long run. I have a GMC Canyon and I go 3 weeks on a tank of gas, it's pretty nice.

Mid-Size is where its at. Perfect balance of the benefits of both types of trucks for sure. :awesomenod:

If it were me I'd be looking at a class b rv. Basically just a van with a tall roof but you get a small kitchen, toilet, shower and bed and you should be able to get something pretty nice within your budget. Depending on the size of the atv you can get carriers that mount into a trailer hitch but they're limited to around 500 pounds usually.

ah unfortunately it probably wont happen till September or later when I rack up enough PTO.  I am thinking about quitting my job and taking contract work though which is a big thing driving the truck idea because I can do travel gigs, make a lot more, and get to explore the nation.  I work in healthcare so I can just move to any city and have a job.

Yea the perks of healthcare, I probably never should have given up medical. Nice part of the travel contracts is that they pay housing stipend. Which you can easily pocket it as extra cash!

OP: What about a minivan like a Honda Odyssey or something like that? Get a small trailer to haul a 4 wheeler etc.... Those would be super comfy and I think all the seats fold down to make it flat in back on most minivans now.

Phil: sooooo, you're back to all of them now?:smirk:
