It shouldn't smell like poop or vomit. More like dirt

Is it 100 percent dry and smells like that? Its coir for gardening right? Does it give ingredients on wrapper or anything like that? Probably isn't just coir. You could probably get it to work but I'm not sure if it would be worth it. It would be better to find another source of coir unless that's all you can get.

Meh... smell is subjective to a degree. Maybe just pasteurize some and see what happens. Sounds like moisture perhaps got introduced to the product in between processing/packaging and purchase and you're smelling bacteria (or it was processed poorly). I went to their website and it's supposed to be free of any foreign material or additives/amendments, and triple washed with the dreamwater of coconut virgins from the source of a lagoon in Sumatra... Never seen hydrated coco grow mold, but I've smelled a distinct change after it's been stored in a closed container for a while... Kind of... something in the range of what you're describing. I still think it would be fine but proof is in the pudding.
