Whangarei ID request
#26661469 - 05/10/20 02:07 AM (3 years, 8 months ago) |

Habitat: Growing under ma lemon tree!!! I mulched quite a few tress in my garden with some partially decomposed flame tree wood chip about 2 years ago. Grass has grown over it but I'm pretty sure its the wood chip.
Gills: Creamy white, attached/not -- matches adnexed, gills
Stem: Length 4-8cms, diameter 2-4mms, colour -white, hollow, thin.
Cap: Diameter 1-2.5cms, color - light brown, , spherical with a bit of a raised dimple, concave.
Spore print color: was unable to get a spore print from the first lot I found. Currently trying to get one from a second small patch I found under a neighbouring tree. Unfortunately they were a bit older... peaking through the glass though it looks promising - at least a dark colour. Very important!
Bruising: Color that the mushroom bruises, if any. BLUE!
Other information: After attempting to take a spore print from the largest cap, I pulled it apart a little and it appeared to have a separable membrane/outer skin, it was slightly dried out though at this point...

Okay thanks for the replies. Wondering if any folks round Auckland or north of can confirm that they grow this far up. Will hopefully have a print tomorrow

Nice find! They've been found in Taiwan and I found it in northern Vietnam, so I'm sure you can find them in northern NZ as well.

Yes, this is P. angulospora, it has been seen in your area before.

Okay I managed to get a pretty crappy print from a smaller older one I found then next day
Hard for me to be 100% sure they are the same mushroom as were a bit older

I thought P. angulospora did not drop spore prints.
Perhaps you printed an old P. tasmaniana cap in stead.

As I said that print is from a second patch (dunno if 4 counts as a patch) next to neighbouring tree which got the same treatment re mulch etc. They were approximately 4m away and were far from fresh so I have wondered why I got a print from them but not the one in my first photo. Initially I thought perhaps it was because I pinched it's stem then left it over night and only realized that I had something the following day. The second patch had gills that were a bit darker. What do you think? Do they look like different types?

I thinks that the mushrooms that don't drop prints (white gills) are Psilocybe angulospora

Psilocybe tasmaniana are often found fruiting along side (or in close proximity) to the aforementioned Psilocybe angulospora...
Psilocybe tasmaniana do leave a sporeprint...

Well if you're right Rodger then I'd be ,very happy..... I feel a lot more confident in the first ID because I got some good pics while it was in semi decent condition. Were you able make out any purple in that print? I don't trust myself judge as I favour one outcome too much. I'll be watching this spot very closely and hopefully be able to collect a better sample. It popped up after we dropped below 10 over night for a few nights. Hopefully early next week we'll get similar conditions. I was considering heavily watering the day before temps drop any tips on helping to trigger fruiting?

Oh sorry to report Rodger those 2 photos are of the same shroom... took one before removing the stem to take print. Obviously I munted it in the process... fucken amateurs. Next time I'm going to be a bit more careful. If you look at my original post they are the first spot then the pics with the print are 2nd spot. Anyway will try to update if I can

Never mind bro, If this mushroom has dark gills it's Psilocybe tasmaniana. I'm stoned/cocky/your picture quality sucks.
But it real life I'm sharp at differentiating Psilocybe angulospora and Psilocybe tasmaniana, your picture quality is terrible. That mushroom could be either of the aforementioned.

This is a Psilocybe tasmaniana mushroom, I totally see the dark gills through that hole in the cap.
