I hear you, brother.  I am considered an essential worker and, other than a brief furlough (2 weeks), I have been working for the entirety of this pandemic.  There is a facility right down the street from where I work where approximately 50 people have become infected with Covid-19.  It's unsettling because my employer does not provide any of its employees with N95's, only cheap cotton masks that do not properly protect against the 3 micron length Sars-CoV-2, and poorly enforces social distancing.  As worried as I am about personally getting infected, I am even more concerned that I will pass it along to family members I come into contact with should I contract the virus.

Some people think it's just about getting so-called "free money" -- it isn't.  Actually, I make a fairly decent living.  I am not wealthy, but I am not struggling to pay the bills each month.  I am genuinely concerned about my health and the health of others I come into contact with, particularly a family member who is in their 60's, who is also a cancer survivor and has type II diabetes.  It's a shame that we must choose between paying the bills and jeopardizing our health and the health of our family members.  I sometimes feel like either way we are screwed, you know what I am saying?  This is definitely a "profit before people" type of situation our government has created, effectively bastardizing people who have a legitimate reason to be worried by making them out to be lazy or just wanting free money.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  We just want to be safe.

Experts are already predicting second and third waves of infections, which they say might cause even more deaths than this already horrific first wave.  This is not over by a long shot, not until a vaccine or effective treatment is developed.

Gee, I have a hard time wondering why. Perhaps it's due to being injected in flu vaccines.

I bet you were okay with the $1 trillion given to Wall Street, right?  Because those rich bankers, the ones who can afford to miss work during this pandemic, create profits for themselves and their elite buddies jobs for Americans.  Let me guess, you think people do not have a valid reason to be worried for their health or the health of their family, right?  You think it's all about "free money," but don't care when it is given to big corporations or Wall Street.  Am I wrong?

I'm a firm believer the economic devastation is going to kill a lot more people than this virus, even with the lockdown measures, social distancing, and masks use in place.

First wave, second wave, doesn't matter.

The economy is fucked and that's going to screw people in more ways than thought possible.

You see these morons "amazed" that it took so long for the government to get much-needed checks out? Are you also a small business owner that experienced the shit show of the PPP, whom, 7 weeks behind their promised delivery date, mismanaged the entire program and shafted millions of small business owners with a fraction of the money promised, coupled with more stipulations and debt risk?

Yeah, that was an appetizer of what's to come when shit actually hits the fan.

hopefully the biggest changes will come in the form of paid sick time, or even unpaid sick time being offered by ALL employers. whats sad is that many "essential" workers do not have this privilege.

hopefully people wont have to go in to work when they have even just a common cold and should stay home.

Where do you think all this "life saving stimulus and UI benefit" money is going to come from, while avoiding inflation?

Who believes they are going to have their jobs "saved" for them so they can soak unemployment up, then just "go back" when that money is gone (sounds like you figured this out faster than most, good for you)?

What are people going to do when nobody is hiring employees because it's cheaper to automate, customers don't want to risk coming in, and it becomes cost prohibitive to employee people?

Are you seeing the meat industry already hitting a wall and not being able to stock grocery stores? We sure are here.

Landlords want their money.

People have been out of work, not making money.

Do some math here.

I'll be a dick.

Many people were already living paycheck to paycheck before shutting down.

And $1,200 is an insult, considering it's our fucking tax dollars, that will be asked for back next year when filing taxes.

For a misleading doc saying two million will perish.

All while numbers add up and reveal a death rate somewhere between .11-.22%.

Pork is the least of anyone's concerns right now.

There are people that think money comes from the air and there's 0 repercussions for duct taping society together with broken, often authoritarian policy indefinitely.

Right. Now, a much larger percentage will be lost because there will be no laborers to harvest.

You know, all those illegal immigrants that bust ass to feed their own families. Won't be able to do that no more, because no unemployment for them.

scoff at me if you will but i see the capitalistic economy as being part of the problem. i dont worry so much because i have a decent amount of money in savings. and yes i feel bad for people, but not so bad when they waste every dime they earn on frivolous, material bullshit.

I don't think you do.

Unlike yourself, many people will not receive unemployment, or stimulus money.

Small businesses are going to have a difficult time drawing customers in when there's a supposed 'deadly' virus going around.

A lot of people are scared, out of their minds. Fearful to go to hospitals for basic checkups.

And again, land lords gonna want that money.

Unless minimum wages is raised to like, $25/hr, times are going to be rough for a large percentage of US residents.

I don't think anyone's arguing that point man.

We're saying where are these people going to go to find income...if everyone else is essentially in the same position that they are?

This is why depressions are insidiously deadly. Everyone's earning power, first and foremost, is decimated. This creates a massive negative feedback loop that fucks everybody.

I'm amazed you see this side of the coin, yet simultaneously deny the economy is doing something bad as a result of people needing to rely on credit more and more since 2008.

Working three jobs is financially irresponsible?

You should stay on unemployment. Maybe invest some of your savings and see how long you can ride it out.

the usa government can help people in need. we have the ways and means. if congress needs to take a pay cut, then so be it.

there will always be work and jobs. i know this pandemic will limit those options, but there is so much wealth in the usa that no one has to go to bed hungry.. even if you are sleeping on the street.

Yes, because you have officially swallowed and digested the narrative you've been fed.

This is what myself and others are trying to tell you is the main flaw in your stance here.

It doesn't matter what you think will happen, it's what actually happens, and history shows what's ahead isn't merely a scrape on the knee and we all go on merrily.

They didn't build it for us, they got involved with fiat money so that they could take out loans any time they needed to feed dumb fucks like you when your homeless with food stamps.

Anytime something doesn't go right they take out a loan and guess what every single country on Earth is doing this but they attempt to avoid taking out loans if they can because it comes back to bite you in the end.

After being eligible you also need the money to be there. It either A comes from loans or B a storage of funds. Unemployment normally comes from a tax corporations pay. When their fund hits a certain amount, their tax goes down. This is incentive to not lay off, fire etc employees and creates a fall back for if the company goes under or has to do a lay off.

Right now at a state level, they are taking out laons to fund the unemployment because its never been slammed like this in its history.

The majority of people have a very very fucked future ahead.

Its already bad, my work called everyone back, but 50% of the employees are committing fraud and collecting unemployment and saying they are not refusing work from their employer, because the unemployment is more than they are making at work lol.

They're going to go through all these peoples accounts at some point and catch them when they verify this shit and its a fucking felony offense.

The $1200 is COMPLETELY tax free. If you read something different, then you have been reading some wack job websites.

But other than that, there is a completely valid argument here. What are the human costs of the disease vs the economic shutdown? The problem is that the experts can make much more educated guesses about the economic side than the medical side. That's why there is so much controversy about reopening.

Can't find a way to survive corona?  This is insanity.  Many are absolutely unaffected by corona.  This is not a severe illness.  Almost everyone who gets corona survives it.  They throw big death tolls at you to scare you with numbers, nevermind the fact that there are over 7000000000 people on the planet.

No one is arguing if the world economy is equitable, but I believe most people in oppressed regions would still like the opportunity to earn income and survive vs not.  They could probably give a fuck about some privileged elite telling them their sustenance needs to be removed for philosophical reasons.

Retail workers are like 10 percent of the population. Most jobs don't involve face to face interaction with customers and those that do can spring for 20 dollars worth of plexi-glass. The world isn't going to end and you will be black to slaving in a exploitative capitalist system that doesn't value you soon enough. If your job can be automated it will be, virus or not.

Yes it sucks all the bars and restaurants are shut down but the industrial plaza I work in is full of vehicles and people, every day, its just less visible than shut down retail locations. Not everyone is out of work, far from it, and the people working will just have to support those that aren't with their tax dollars until its over. I haven't missed a day, I haven't taken one cent of a government handout. Unemployment in my area is 13 percent. Lots of people have transitioned to working for home too.

Government has nothing but money, you just got suckered into believing it needs the money to buy bombs and war machines instead of hospitals and school lunches.

I've been working more hours since this covid shit started, I average 53 hours a week right now. I am tired of hearing all these lazy whiny ass people not wanting to go back to work because they are happier taking the government handed out money. Get the fuck back to work and earn your money like a man and stop pretending to be scared of this bullshit virus so you can get paid to stay home and play video games.

Another thing that pisses me off is people who work over the system. I deliver packages for a living and I deliver to the clinic here. They cut hours due to the covid thing so they don't work Fridays. The workers get 32 hours in a week and collect unemployment for being laid off on Friday. So for being laid off ONE day a week they collect unemployment AND get the additional $600 a week just because they lose a single day of work. Shit is fucked up.

Welcome back, I've been at work full time the entire time.

Past few weeks have been some sort of Twilight zone/reversoland where those with the least useful jobs (therefore not "essential") were being paid to do nothing.

Not a sustainable concept at all.

This is part of the divide and conquer strat. Everyone will hate everyone because of the virus, the people who realized it was over blown vs the people who don't.

Lost of people still believe its a big deal solely because they want to get this 1300 a week unemployment. I was laid off for 3 weeks and the 1,300 to sit at home was great lol can't deny staying home and gaming was fun.

But the idea is now that I am back at work, I can't deny I like sitting at home and enjoying myself like most people, I would rather be laid off right now.

Destroy the economy, demotivate the employees, make the working employees angry at the non working, nothing will be the same after this. Society is breaking down. They won.

So true, amazing how many people were virtue signalling on twitter lobbying their employers to furlough them so they can get that phat pay slip to sit at home.

Right now you are communicating on the internet, and all the electronics you are using to do this, the servers, wires etc all use gold. Its one of the most conductive materials there are and is limited in supply and was made from supernovas billions of years ago.

lol who are "they"?

if you think society was great 6 months ago then you are the ignorant one my friend. society as we know it wreaks havoc on our planet. polluting and destroying eco systems. but what do humans care? as long as they get to go to work for pennies and buy fancy shoes and purses.

as for demotivating employees? you mean to tell me that people loved their jobs before this covid shit. that is naive. i dont know anyone that loves their job. i know it exists, but its not common. we work to eat and pay bills. thats the baseline motivation.

not everyone is filled with disdain for others. the "essential" workers are not going to hate the furloughed workers because they are getting unemployment. to say such a thing proves how cruel your heart is.
