I'm lost * 2
    #26660259 - 05/09/20 03:28 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Okay, I give up. How do I escape the rat race?

I really just want to drop out of society, live in a cabin, take psychedelics, experience the Creator, and stroll the countryside. I think you get the picture.

It's been 6 agonizing years since I left the psychonaut world to enter Corporate America. I am working in a $200k job, but I have no work-life balance, it's extraordinary stressful, I'm wasting my life because I have no time for anything else, and, because of that, I'm not taking any psychedelics. I am the stereotypical guy who is staring out a window, upset with what he is doing with his life but feeling trapped and with no way out. I don't want to waste this life.

I have tried earnestly to find a lower paying job, but, my constant problem is that none seem to really provide a work-life balance, and they're all stuck in the city. I really HATE the city and it's noise, pollution, hustle-and-bustle, density, background anxiety, too many people around, and outrageously expensive housing costs for minimal living space... it makes me irate just thinking that that's somehow become OKAY for society. So, then, that takes me back to square one in my sacrifice-everything-here's-$200k-if-you-don't-get-fired job (at least that gives me some good savings for the hope of retiring in 10 years).

What I would really like to do is find a laid back job in the countryside, where I make enough to live and have my own cabin. I put that figure at $35k. What's out there? What's realistic? I'm very frugal, but I need enough to survive. MOST IMPORTANTLY, I want a job that fits well with a psychedelic life.

Any recommendations?! PLEASE, I'm at my wits end, I WANT TO GET OUT OF THE RAT RACE!

:whathesaid:

Or live in or on temple/monastic grounds, Or live as a private farmer and gardener.  That’s what I’ll likely be doing later in life.  And if you go farm route one can always add to a homestead as time goes on.

“Creation” is everywhere, if you go with the view that it’s all from a creator - then all experience is indelibly marked, regardless of where you are or what your doing.  Even in corporate America, lmao.  But in that setting it’s easy to miss what is seen by the eye and what the very eye looking is itself.  I sympathize though, and find it easier to recognize the primordial connection directly in a more...specific low key setting - less distractions = more reflection = more clarity.
Good thing you have going for you is If your making $200k a year, and your live frugally and true to your dream, you can make it come true.

Also, with just a BA and an internet connection you can teach ESL to foreign countries and made a nice supplemental income wherever you are - if you need.  So even the whole cabin in the middle of “nowhere” can work if done right.

Personally, moving to Mx,  De, Jp, or Th. is the idea.  Mexico being my first pick.

What's holding you back from moving to the country side? Houses can be found for easily less than $150k. Taxes for 2k a year. Save up money from that 200k/yr job and get yourself a house and leave the city once it's paid off.

Hmmm, thats a tricky one. What kinds of jobs do you like? Sounds like you're a smart person so Im guessing you want a challenging career?

Im thinking something in the sciences, like a Biologist or Chemist. That way you can learn about both drugs and the beauty of Creation.

Also, maybe start investing in Crypto currency. It could be big someday. Or just daytrade.

Great idea with the Park Ranger. Another good one is a Land Surveyor.

Just save up a few hundered k and buy a cheap house and retire. You can get decent houses for 100k in places like georgia, save up 200-300k and your options open up more but make sure you also have a few extra 100k to survive off of, taxes food utilities etc.

This is what I have been doing and planning. My net worth is getting near 500k and I have never made 200k so not sure what you are doing wrong.

Also for long term income you can invest in rental properties etc. Swoop up stocks when this financial collapse is for sure nearly done

You are in the same position as many of us (sans the 200,000! wow).
My plan - for consideration.
Malicious Compliance in a job that brings me no real joy. Stacking chips. Living super cheap. Growing our own food. Huckleberry guile all around. Biggest expense is music gear and food but that's what keeps us sane.
Saving up money is the key. When you have a goal, the rat race is sometimes easier to "deal with". So save that money. Depending on where you live, you can find 10-20 acre plots for 35-70,000. That's plenty of land to be self-sufficient (or close to).

If you own the land, and own the house (or have very little debt - your monthly costs are super cheap. Taxes and insurance. Whatever you choose to use.

Anyway. I feel you. This has caused me a lot of pain, in the last two years. I'm planning to back after quarantine, even though it's painful, because I want another year or two of making money. Both me and my girl are on the same trip. She buys clothes at old navy with her credit card points, and shops at thrift stores. We rarely eat out.

If there is a will - there is a way. When you know the way, perhaps your will/attitude will change.

In the meantime, I have been filling time with music, garden, and youtubes about homesteading and planting for market. Think: microgreens, spinach, tomatoes.

You can do it. Just remember - you choose your life - even when you hate it. Change it if you dare!

One another thing. My pa always said, "do something you love and you never work a day in your life". I think that's the goal. If you find something you love to do, work won't seem like such a chore. Work life balance? Who cares - you love your life and work?

My dad was gone a lot when we were kids - building a future for us. I'm not sure of your obligations but if it's you and a partner - you really have no excuse except for the allure of money and I think we are all guilty of that from time to time.

Education. Even admin assistant or technology- not something that requires a license. Chock full of benefits and the salary is what you are seeking. Move out of the city and your money seems to grow exponentially.

Public Service.
Government Jobs.
Landscaping
Park Management.

So basically you're telling us all you spunked all your money away and wasted it.

It's simple.

You bank it.

Then you change your life with it..

If you're complaining about a 200k job then I sincerely doubt that anything in life is going to make you happy. Most people can only dream about making that kind of money. And everyone has to work doing something, and work is much the same no matter what you're doing or how much you make. It's still work at the end of the day. So if you can't be happy with 200k, then I really doubt anything is going to do it.

Learn to be happy with what you have.

If he donates me half his salary the return on investment will be 400%, as I will enjoy his 100k 400% more than he will and can make that money work for me.

Thanks all for the really good advice here from everyone. It does mean a lot.

To clarify one thing: yes, the good news is that I saved a bunch from dragging myself through the mud with this $200k job for 6 years and living extremely frugally.

So then, why, you might ask:

Quote:

"What's holding you back from moving to the country side? Houses can be found for easily less than $150k. Taxes for 2k a year. Save up money from that 200k/yr job and get yourself a house and leave the city once it's paid off."

Quote:

"Just save up a few hundered k and buy a cheap house and retire. You can get decent houses for 100k in places like georgia, save up 200-300k and your options open up more but make sure you also have a few extra 100k to survive off of, taxes food utilities etc.

Yes, I have a few hundred k. I'm afraid it's not that simple though.

I am single and in my late 20s and want to have a family. The amount I have (while it's a great base to let compound) feels kind of like a whole lot of nothing, because, at the end of the day, it's just not enough to let me retire and support a happy family. Health insurance costs alone, which never cease to skyrocket, would make this a predictable disaster.

That's why I'm trying to find the right job. The key is that the job needs to be conducive for a psychedelic life. In the rolling hills of the countryside, doing something inspirational. The "real deal", so to speak.

How can I take on jobs in what you guys proposed:
- Park ranger
- Private farmer / gardener
- ESL to foreign countries
- Land surveyor
- Admin assistent or tech
- Landscaping

How would I go about applying for any of that? Where would I start? Would it really pay at least $35k? Is there something actionable I can do to make this work?

My worry is that a lot of these things are easier to propose and imagine than actually implement or think through to the end. Like, I would love to be a private farmer, but how on Earth is someone with not the slightest clue about the field exactly supposed to get the ball rolling on that and make $35k?

I don't want to throw away my life when I know how incredible psychedelics and reality are. I want to live in the countryside and explore the magic of existing. Work is a tragedy, because it takes us away from sensing the miracle or having time to appreciate it. So, anything, you guys can answer above will be tremendously helpful not just to myself, but to others who are asking the same thing, regardless of financial standing.

Right now is a shit time to attempt to switch careers, shitloads of people are out of work and the job market will be saturated.

If you want to have a family your current job is ideal to have a family,

if you want to have a family doing drugs is not the right time, gonna have to put that on pause for the next 20 years and punish yourself to make sure your family has what they need.
