From all the stuff I've seen posted, I don't think you'll find West-Coast ovoids in the same places that people often find East Coast oviods ie out in nature in proximity to creeks.

Rather they seem to be found in the same places as cyans ie mulch beds and other man-influenced environments with plenty of digestible wood.

Maybe more seasoned west-coast ovoid hunters can correct me if I'm wrong.

Holy shit I am bad at this. I found those exact looking ones at a large park yesterday and I passed them up. Are ovoids basically always like dark brown like that when young because I found a few like that. Many of the ones I picked i am pretty damn sure are actually fieldcaps of some sort. I might have one active. Or might not. I really need help with this shit before I kill myself on accident. I was so stoked too cuz I thought I had them after all the time spent looking and walking that damn park.

Mobydick is correct. You want to be looking in mulch beds.

Sakrelig, Agrocybe pins can be dark too. Ovoid pins are sometimes dark but some phenotypes can be lighter colored. Also, please stop posting non active mushrooms. If you need to get an ID request, start your own thread.

Sakrelig: Peep this post https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26653015
Also, don't beat yourself up. Ovoids are not necessarily easy to find. I've only found one patch by myself and that was pure happenstance.

Here's a chonky baby from the other day.

I see you have an enemy in the last picture, any tried n true advice for keeping those slugs away from a woodchip bed? I've heard of using beer to draw them away, building a slugg fence, and just going out at night and killing or relocating them but it's my first year outdoors so I'm always looking for upgraded methods! Thanks

Slugs dont have 5h2ta brain receptors for psilocybin to occupy so they arent getting high they're just eating your mushrooms.

Do you have any suggestions for keeping them away from your beds?

You can set traps of beer cans, slugo etc etc but I don't I usually get such large flushes that I consider it collateral damage they don't get too many.

Really the best way is to grow them in raised beds or tree planter containers. You can keep them completely out this way. You can also place a fine mesh netting over them to keep the gnats out as the larvea do just as much damage as the slugs

That makes sense, though will not destroy my love. I plan to get a slug tattoo hehe.

In other news I hope this big rain storm on the forecast pushes out some more clusters! The regular patch I visit has been producing for over a month and a half almost and I wonder when it is going back to bed.

I am also in the PNW and have similar problems with slugs. I have several bags of Corry's, but I always feel slightly guilty putting it out. But put it out I will until I'm out of it.

For now, I make daily rounds under all of our potted veggie/berry/herb plants and use the garden spade on them.

I'm also putting out the Corry's once every couple of weeks.

And I have two experimental beer traps that seem to be working nicely, but I feel badly about the wasted beer, so probably not going to repeat that.

These show ovoids from two separate patches in Seattle. The big ones grow singly in very deep grass and mulch.

From this season? It's been so dry. Seems rain came too early, or the heat has. I'm still new to spring active hunting and reside in the south end so it's possible my reasoning is askew....

that fine mesh idea is golden :super:
