This is an informal poll. What price are you selling gourmet mushrooms at? I’m starting at $16/lb farmers market and $10 to restaurants. Are you selling higher or lower. Right now I’m just selling oysters.

I sell at $10 an lb at the farmers market. $8 to restaurants. But I am going to try cutting my prices to $8 and $6. It costs me under $1 to make a 5 lb bag that produces at least 1.5 lbs of mushrooms. So my profit will still be up there if I cut my prices. Which I hope will bring in more business.

Wow that's pretty cheap for farmer's markets, and you're cutting it more? Good deal. Or is it that I live in Maine? Never see any mushrooms here for much less than $12/lb at the markets, even oysters.

I am not sure if I will drop it or not. I am just not satisfied with how much I am selling. I used to make fireworks. Everyone used to sell what I made for $6 each. I sold them for $2 each nothing under 100 pcs. I had about 0.10 cents in each one. I would sell 40000 in two weeks. My point being. Sure I could have sold them for more, but I would not have sold as many or made nearly as much. I would work for about a month out of the year and I lived really well! I am just not sure if this will translate over the same way.

Farmers Markets, at least around here as it has been explained to me by multiple people ranging from sellers, Market managers to customers, are higher priced than the same goods you would buy at a local produce by a little. Reason being is similar to the Organic label demanding a higher price. If you are a local grower you are a higher valued commodity and people are willing to pay slightly more to get it and expect to pay slightly more for the privilege. Also, at least around my way, Gourmet Mushrooms being sold at a market helps other sellers too because people will come to the market just because there is a Gourmet Mushroom seller. That is how this one Market Manager that keeps chasing me has put it.
So, don't sell yourself or your high valued product short. Because then sometimes people will start to think that you and your product are not worth that much and pass you by, since you are not valuing your product as much. It's a balancing act for sure as one figures out their local area market.
-------------------- Plan to win or you are planning for failure. Don't let anyone tell you you can't do it. Just figure out the solution. Even if that means banging your head on a wall until the solution oozes out of you.
