PF Tek: Sawdust Substitution?
    #26657987 - 05/08/20 05:37 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Anyone substitute sawdust for vermiculite and use it on cubenis grows?

Do a 'search posts' using the link at the top of the page and search my name and 'pf tek'.  I've fruited several species on pf cakes.  Shiitake does well on pf cakes if you substitute sawdust for the verm.  Use the same exact recipe, just make the sawdust substitution.

For what purpose? Lack of vermiculite?

For one, to see if its possible (Experimentation). For two, because Ive seen a thread in Mushroom ID and Hunting where a IDer grew cubenis outdoors on woodchips. So I am pretty sure it will work and may have some kind of benefit over vermiculite.

Yeah it will work. I think your better with leaf mulch vs saw dust. But if you mean using pelletized wood that expand with water. Should be good. But you still need vermiculite for the dry filter barrier because verm is not nutrious as wood is.

I would try smoking wood pellets.( I mean the ones used for smoking, do not light them on fire) Water them down let them expand and then mix with BRF. Here's the rub, who knows how much water to use because 2/1/1 isn't going to apply.

I don't know how well cube like wood, but those tubs that didn't mold out on my of oak mulch and pine mulch as a substrate did fully colonize the sub and produce.

I need to update the covid experiment thread. I have some PEU producing on oak mulch with a jiffy casing layer.

Yeah you could do wood pellets add rice flower and then add water till you get field capacity.  But you still need verm for a filter unless you do Cron's PP5 with ships.

Cool! Great idea, thanks man

My idea is to make a substrate that can work on both edibles and cubenis.

Interesting.

Looks like a 60/40 BRF-Sawdust blend will be my best bet :strokebeard:

I’ve always seen verm as helping avoid compaction along with retaining moisture.
Sawdust and brf alone sounds like it would be difficult to avoid compaction.
It’s just cakes though. Try it.

Definitely gonna try it. I wonder if theres a "golden ratio" of sawdust to PF mixture. My guess is 60/40 PF Mix to Sawdust

Could always use a GE filter on them and just open the lid to inoculate

I found a shroomery sponsor with birch wood dowel pins. Looks like my best bet.

No dowel pins! They are hard and used for wood lovers dowel incoulate.

You want wood pellets from Lowe's or home Depot.
