Does reading about current events/politics/history enhance your life? 2

So I posted a thread a while ago about how I just stopped following current events entirely. I felt that media added little value
I have been catching up recently. I started because I stumbled on a podcast with Ben Shapiro and Jordan Peterson. I liked the ideas Peterson puts forth. He is more in the self-development sphere and discusses personal responsibility for those who don't know.
That opened up Pandora's box. Over the past couple weeks I have been actually reading a lot about religion, politics, christianity, islam etc.
The republican party is a joke. Ben Shapiro looks really smart in a narrow context with youtube hits but outside of that he is unable to hold any ground. I saw his debate with Sam Harris and his head was so far up his ass I was shocked. Republicans invaded Iraq for oil based on lies and little did I know we killed 3.5 civilians. 10% of the population in 10 years. The political instability has caused the Syrian Civil War. Reading about what ISIS and Boko Haram does (which were founded due to this instability) is sickening. Sex slaves and mass murder. Afghanistan was attacked after 9/11 and 9/11 was actually tied to the King of Saudi Arabia who funded Osama. Obama, Trump, Bush and Clintons are all personally friends with the king of Saudi Arabia. All those investigations were cut short. Trump has proposed invading iraq again for oil. We propped up iran, iraq, saudi arabia, all of south america, and even drug cartels to fund authoritarian coups in the name of "justice" because we disliked certain socialist governments. Most of the democratic party has a really literal ideas of compassion and its sickening too. They try and act like they are woke but they are equally lost. Many left leaning folks have the same idea of foreign policy, just covertly. Also; they have big ties to corporations and are close to rich middle eastern countries as well. This doesn't mention Hawaii, /korea, vietnam etc.
I was pretty shocked. the amount of deaths that the US has caused is easily many times more than what hitler did in the holocaust. Easily. Both sides of the political spectrum have ties to corporations and big business.
The past couple weeks really made me realize that I bubbled myself (intentionally) from the current events. But now that the mask is removed I am truly shocked. America, China (detains millions of muslims) etc. are all toxic and twisted nations that do more damage than any terrorist could do.
After coming out of this research hole I found myself in, I am realizing how fortunate I am to be in a middle class home with sober parents. My life is far from perfect. FAR. But the issues that made me take on a victim mentality are reduced. My life isn't perfect. But I am not a raped iraqi women and my countries' infrastructure is not ruined for oil
Before I closeted myself in intentionally for years. Anything outside of meditation, psyches, my work (software), and my sex/social life anything else was really not of interest. I am realizing that learning more about the world around me is valuable. It made me realize how boxed in most american's ideas are of the govt. It made me realize how valuable my life is. It motivates me to become better. It also makes me realize politics is a joke. Most who make it in office sadly need to make psychopathic concessions to get a job done.
Does keeping up with current events and history enhance your life? Or take away from it?

It's funny watching Ben Shapiro when he has to debate someone who isn't a teenager at some liberal arts school. Never seems to go well for him.
I've been obsessed with world news and politics for the last few years. History since I was a kid.
Definitely doesn't make me any happier. If anything it's just a constant reminder I should focus more on myself and the things I can control. So many things are pretty bleak once you start delving deeper into them.

This is good to me. its a sense of humility. People praise obama but rarely acknowledge that he is guilty of war crimes too

I was such a big fan of Jordan Peterson. Like he truly inspired me and I read his book, 12 rules for life and watched many of his lectures. I would have gone to a live lecture last year if there were any tickets left. But I dont understand why as someone who is so against ideologies, he just threw himself in the bandwagon of the right. Its almost he used the "the enemy of my enemy is my friend". Like ofc the left is crazy but so is the right. Lets be honest and say any extremes are by definition crazy.
However, Jordan Peterson has kind of fallen in my eyes, feels like he is embracing crazy people because many of his fans come from those groups. Kinda sucks, but doesnt mean that his books arent good.

#ReopenTheThread
I find that it does enhance my life. I only expose myself to a little bit of it. I find it all pretty interesting and I like to be in the know (even slightly) of current events and might impact the future and possibly my life. Without the news, I never would have even know about the Coronavirus untill it was "too late". Everybody rails on the "Fake News" but fail to acknowledge that it isnt ALL fake news.
Its important to read some of the news to at least have a general idea of whats going in the world, and can make for some interesting conversation as well, which is always interesting and welcomed.

No. I find that I don't get anything positive out of it at all, and would stop, if not for the fact that I have nothing better to do a lot of the time.
On the other hand, the first thing many cults do is to cut people off from the news and media, so maybe there is some positive psychological impact of keeping up with the news.

definitely bad for your psyche
still obligated to read the news tho
if you let the government take 40% of your money you should have some feelings over what they do with it

back when I did drugs ? I barely saw any news. I just partied and sometimes would go to work. Even though I always had a blast time moved a lot slower. Happiest moments of my life. Now I am responsible and I guess successful I pay attention to politics and the news and its all trash. Swine flu came and went and I only heard that word once when it happened.

I occasionally watch my local news, but it’s rare. I never watch CNN, FoxNews, or the other 24 hour news networks. They are all liars, worse than politicians. I do enjoy history, particularly from WW1 and WWII and the years between. I find the 60s intriguing too. I also like reading about the history of psychedelics. Right now I’m reading a book called Chaos. It’s about the Manson murders. Very good book.

It's a sure-fire way to create unnecessary anxiety for no reason.
I'd assert it's the antithesis to stable quality of life.
