Cultivating in Quarantine - Noob Shoebox Grow * 1
    #26620535 - 04/22/20 04:55 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Greetings fellow earthlings! I've decided to use this time in containment to cultivate some mushrooms at home with supplies sourced online. I'll try to chronicle my process here and would appreciate any tips along the way!

Mostly basing this grow off what I've learned from BOD's easy AF shoebox thread.

Late March I ordered 4 Spore Works spawn bags and 4 spore syringes (Golden Teacher, B+, Amazonian & Puerto Rican) and inoculated my first bag with GT spores. 3 weeks later I inoculated my 2nd bag with B+.

For my tubs, I've ordered a number of shoeboxes (with lids) as well as those elastic/plastic food covers (instead of grocery bag)

I've just received 2 x 2lb bags of substrate and will be setting my first boxes up in the coming days. Just kinda curious what ratio of substrate to spawn I should use and if I should mix or layer. Seems I should be able to get 2 shoeboxes going off my first bag right? Any help greatly appreciated! :mushroom2:

Oh also.. anyone have info about shelf life of spawn bags? Think I should go ahead and inoculate my other 2?

And sorry for the huge image embeds.. this link shoould be easier on the eyes https://imgur.com/a/IwUvqOZ

You want the bulk/sub ratio to be between 1:1 and 1:4. I use 1:2,something. Just mix it, don't layer it... although you might want to add a thin final layer of bulk substrate.

Thanks yall! Will post pics/update once the spawn is ready to be boxed.

Looks like I'll end up splitting the 3lb Spawn bag evenly between the 2 2lb substrate bags for a 1:1.5 ratio as I don't have more substrate at the moment (will start ordering 6 lbs substrate per 3lb spawn bag for subsequent grows)

I'm using the standard size "showboxes".. any guesses how many boxes I'll be able to make? Guessing 2-3.

My whole spawn bag seems to be complete aside from one stubborn corner.. wondering if I should wait a few more days or get the shoeboxes started... getting excited

May as well shake it if it's slow to finish. Will be ready to spawn this weekend surly.

Also upload on this site if you want help. Sterilized spawn bags should last for weeks unused.

But if you're in a hurry, and really got to go
If you're in a hurry, might have to find out slow
That it's one thing to try and another to fly
You get there quicker just a step at a time
It's one thing to bark, another to bite
The show ain't over till you pack up at night

You have some bacteria there. I'd take everything out and trash uncolonized grain then spawn to shoeboxes.

Uh-oh..how can I tell where the bacteria is.. is it in the corner area that hasn't colonized yet? Any tips for saving it? Thanks!

You see all those grains that are pressed against the bag and the part that's pressing isn't colonized? That's all bacteria, but my guess is that corner got hit harder. Just try to get the whole cake out in one piece, then do a little surgery and remove anything that isn't colonized yet. You'll probably get a flush or two out of that.

Thanks for the tip. I removed the spawn from bag and tried to use just the top half, avoiding the problem spot. Made 3 shoeboxes.. Pics for reference

Do I need to leave the boxes in a sunny window or will they be fine on kitchen shelf with ambient light most of the day?

I'll probably throw the unused "contam'd" spawn outside in the garden and see what happens.

While they're still fresh, I'd go back, level and tap them out a little. An even, flat surface will provide way better surface conditions.

Ambient light is enough. Heat from direct sunlight will fuck them up.

Cool thanks for the tips! I went ahead and packed them down better. Will post updates once the boxes show signs of life.

Hard to tell from the outside but I've got a ton of tiny pins in all 3 of my shoeboxes  Think I should take the "lids" off daily to introduce more fresh air or just let em do their thing?

My second spawn bag is showing progress... last time I mixed the bag but wondering if I should just leave it this time as I've read different things on here.

remove the lid so you can take a good picture, it will not affect anything. mix the spawn bag around 25% colonized.

Yikes.. pretty concerned after looking inside.. lots of white fuzz around :/

Is this round of showboxes effectively dead or should I hold out and see what survives?

And the spawn bag.. yes it's very wet inside.. how can that be avoided? I'm using bags I ordered in March.. aside from potentially contaminating, think the grain bag is too old/gone bad? I have 2 more bags I was planning to use but obviously the first two aren't proving successful.

:tryingnottodie:
I'll admit I have no idea what I should be looking for here :/

IRL nothing looks "black" inside, perhaps the photos aren't doing it justice? Regardless you are saying I should just dispose of this all ASAP instead of waiting to see what happens?
