Coir/Verm/Gypsum, plus anything else?

Hey and thanks for reading. Simple question; I use coir/verm/gypsum as my substrate. Does anyone use this substrate with other components? Is there something else I can add to increase my yields? If so, what should I add?
Thanks again, Joe

That’s all I use. Some people like to put instant coffee in there but that seems to often be met with derision. Just go with what you got right now. See how good it works and then experiment later so that you can something to compare it to. Then you might want to try worm casings. I have yet to try it but that seems intuitive. Good luck man. It’s a learning process. You won’t always get it right but you will learn.

To me it just depends on what you’re looking for. If you want more weight I think you’d be better off using CVG and just spawning more tubs.
If you just like experimenting and stuff then I’ve always felt hpoo made for slightly better grows. But that was just anecdotal stuff I never did any isolate tests or anything. Coffee is a contam magnet if you’re not careful, and even sometimes if you are.
I think anything you add to a CVG mix will give you minimal yield increase if any at all. The grains seem to have plenty of nutrients already. I’d be curious if there was anything out there that cause cubes to produce more active components. Cacti respond to damage or dehydration or something like that by producing more of the good stuff but I don’t know what might make cubes do that, if anything

I don't really use anything but straight coir anymore - I will add dry verm in if I prepped my coir too wet, to get to field capacity.

I've always used just coir and verm. Gypsum was a thing?

Gypsum IS a thing. Some people have quit using gypsum (calcium sulfate, CaSO4 2H2O). Many still use it in bulk grows because it's an excellent source of nutrition to first accelerate mycelium growth and later improve overall quality and quantity of fruit.

I've been using it because that's what I learned. Its not that expensive, but I've done some rounds without it and never noticed too much of a difference. Probably not needed, but I really think it just comes down to how good your genetics are.

I wasn’t ever really sure what gypsum did but I also use it, and have not used it and noticed no real difference.
That said, coir works well because it’s only slightly nutritious and hold water really well, especially with Vern added. Overly nuted subs contaminate easier and can sometimes affect yield. If you want a bigger yield, clone a clustered fruit and use more spawn.

For years I've been using bricks of coir. Now I've been using a mixture of horse manure and everything else.

Straight coir works perfectly well by it self.

I think the reason coir works really well is that it has a lack of nutrition and high water retention. All your nutrition should come from your spawn and not your substrate.

Cvg has always worked the best for me with cubes. Using manure brought me problems, which is almost certainly because I didn’t take proper precautions to ensure it didn’t get introduced to any contaminated; but none the less, most people will find coir is the way to go.
