That's awesome if it's contam free. Keep us updated if anything happens to them! I've just bought a new dehydrator, might bleach my old one and keep it clean for HG dehydrating only.

The dehydrator is a good idea.  I put ten plates in the oven...

Oven on lowest, 170. Plates with lids slightly loose on cooling rack, rack on baking sheet.  Let run for two or three hours.  Cooled overnight. Only the tiniest droplets remained.

FWIW, baking sheet is convenient but not necessary.  This temperature won't melt anything so whatever you have will work.  I could have put two cooling racks per level in this 36" oven and cook 70-80 at a time.

Now I'm going agar-crazy. Lots of side experiments. Just yesterday transferred pins from a cloned BRF jar (crazy!), myc from a sweet patch inside an oat jar (crazy!), drops of clone biopsy gsw LC from a fruit that won the beauty pageant (hopeful  - LC has been folly for me), and more.

Need to refine my techniques.  Bumbled around inside the SAB doing each of these things (separately, one at a time) and often found my hands in the wrong place, lid open for too long, all sorts of mistakes.  But having fun and with much appreciation to Mr. Alien and Bod and Eats and ShaperDreaming and D3monic and so many others.

I ordered some from the new supplier a few days after making my second order from the OP supplier. Half the price and Amazon says they're going to beat the OP supplier delivery by.... Two months.

I'm curious about the dehydrator as well, though with the turbulent air flow in the dehydrator it's likely something nasty will make it around the thread and into the plate.

I've actually had success making these perfectly clear with no pooling and without unscrewing them, but I still don't think it's worth the contam risk that seems to be inherent in screwing with them too much.
The idea is that if the lid stays hotter than the agar, condensation will occur mainly on the agar surface, and if we do it while the agar is liquid the water will not pool but rather solidify with the agar.
I've set the HGs on the counter (wiped with sanitizer), still hot from the PC and agar is liquid, I've placed a rectangular flat Pyrex dish full of hot water on top of the HGs and closed the dish with a lid to keep the water hot.
I've had to replace the hot water twice, but they came out perfect, complete visibility and no pooling.
Only done this once though since I don't think it's worth the contam risk.

I would not think there is a significant contam risk when doing that. Especially if the lids are on tight. Many people store the agar dishes on open shelves without contam problems.

Will try either your trick or the dehydrator with my next batch, picking up 24 more dishes today!

I ran 18 of the new ones. Only top2 of the stack had little condensation. Works great. I put 9 in each half gal pickle jar. . Stack them on the lid then put jar on over them. Once pc cooled down with no pressure I take them out and restack them in front hood. Only 2 out 18. Not to bad.

This is really neat. Read the entire thread and put in an order for 40 arriving in about a week! I was seriously considering building a flow hood because I hate dealing with pouring in an SAB and had lots of bad luck with a variety of different no pour plates. I generally dread agar work, but I understand the necessity of it, so I'm hoping this tek works for me!

Huge thanks to nevereataamanita! I use the 16 quart presto and scoured this thread to see if I could make it work in my PC.

nevereataamanita said:
I made 24 holy grail plates today in a 16-qt Presto. I mixed 500 mL of LME agar, so each plate got about 20 mL. I used two layers of jar rings to get the trivet right up to water level, then stacked the plates in four columns of six plates each. Placed an upside down quart jar over each stack (the mouth of the jar was just short of touching the trivet).

After venting, I PC'd at 15 PSI for 30 minutes. I let the PC get back down to 0 PSI on its own, then let it sit for a full hour (even though I suspect this smaller PC cools down relatively fast compared to the big AA Mr. Alien uses). After one hour I took the plates out of the PC, placed them on my counter in the same stacks and put the jars back over the stacks.

Because I understand the idea is to insulate and cool slowly, I covered the jars with a bunch of layers of kitchen towels--like 12 or so. I let that pile sit until the jars were at about room temperature, about six hours.

When I uncovered them, they had turned out like this: the top two in each stack were hella condensated.

The third plate down in each stack was a bit better.

But the bottom three in each stack were pretty much perfect--no condensation to speak of!

So a full half of these plates were ready to use immediately--much better than I had expected things to turn out.

I cracked the lid of the condensated ones just a slight turn, and placed them all in a shoebox with the lid on (probably not necessary?) I'll let them sit a couple weeks and hope to see them clear up!

Thanks Mr. Alien, I'm excited about these!

It's a custom tool made for mycology.  Pretty much hole punch.
I'm just now using mine so I'm learning also. Make sure it's cool first, some times I don't punch all the way thru and just cut the circle out when its scalpel time.

I've used these containers myself for a good while and that is how I clear up condensation. I actually individually wrap them in cheap thin foil and wrap the whole stack in thicker foil to distribute the heat a bit, and I leave them in the thin foil and just put them all under the hot Pyrex not really knowing which ones need it and I unwrap them before using.

I like these containers a lot although I find my glass +parafilm ones grow just a tiny bit faster.  Assuming it's from the extra gas exchange through the parafilm.  I usually use the glass for the masters and the plastic for transfers.

Is that a leather punch? I've tried to use mine to get a perfectly round wedge, but I can never get the myc out. Wondering if you have a trick for that?

You get it out using a scalpel. The leather punch is just to make a circle

These are awesome.  The first time I pressure cooked these I put them in quart jars (Kerr are taller than Ball and can hold 6 easily) and filled the quart jar with water.  After cooking I let them cool overnight.  I had no condensation in the bottom 5 and the top one had a ton of condensation.  There were some problems with this method though.  First, the mason jar has to have a little room to vent.  I flipped metal lids and the bottom plates warped a little due to pressure I think.  Second, you'll need to wrap saran wrap around them to prevent water getting inside.  The first time I did this experiment I tested to see if water can get inside prior to pressure cooking and nothing got into them.  Once pressure is added though, water can get into them.  Third, I overcooked the agar I think (I'm new to this so I could be wrong here but there are dark chunks of sediment in the agar mix) because there's so much water it takes longer to heat and cool the pressure cooker meaning a 40 minute cook time should probably be reduced to like 20 minutes.  Mycelium seems to be growing fine on these overcooked agar plates though so I don't know.  I experimented with 15 minute cook time at ~16 PSI 4 days ago and I have yet to see bacteria or mold with the lids cracked open.

The pictures below are using a method where I just stacked them on the rack (presto 23q), the rack was raised above water using metal mason jar lids, and I didn't put anything over them.  After cooking I cracked the lid to dry condensation, like it was suggested here.  These are what they look like 1 day after cooking.  About 80% of mine were clear after 24 hours.

I thought I could do more experiments to help reduce condensation, but honestly cracking the lids is incredibly fast where I live (low humidity) and I plan on prepping agar ahead of time on weekends and stuff anyway so it'll never be a problem for me.

I'm glad I found these because I just started and already went through 60 petri dishes and it'll be nice to not have to throw a bunch of plastic away.

Thanks.

Best thing I found still is 1/2gal pickle jars. Unmodified.  Stack 9 of the HG on the inside of the lid. Place jar over top them. Screw the lid on. (The jars upside  down)It will squeeze them tight so they don't slide around. I wrap that in foil so water dont leak in. If it does it's not enough to get into the jars if your trivets raised.
I vent for ten min. The put weight on. I start 25 min when its rocking good. Turn Down heat.
After the 25min PC let cool down hour and stack them all in one tall stack.
Let cool. Bang.
Only top 2 put of 18 has condensation. That's all you can fit in them jars. In a 23qt presto. 2 big jars. But you can put a qt jar next to them to get 6 more HG in.
I have trouble with them getting stuck in the quarts.
Anyone else have that issue?

Thought I saw someone wrapping these in parafilm in an image today. I don’t and it works just fine.

This thread is a game changer and should be posted as a sticky.
