Two sad tubs (drying out, side pins)
    #26654527 - 05/07/20 07:09 AM (3 years, 9 months ago)

I have two 54qt tubs:
– KSSS
– Leucistic GT

Do either of these look contaminated? Especially the KSSS tub—the more bulging white areas of the tub look strange to me. Images taken 7 days after spawning

Method:
Lucy GT: spore prints > agar (pasty plates) > 2 transfers
KSSS: 18 month old refrigerated agar culture > 2 transfers
...
rye jars PC'd at 15PSI for 120 minutes > Blenderless Liquid Innoculant Tek to inoculate rye jars > Bucket Tek > Unmodified 54qt monotubs

Ratio: 4 quarts spawn, 1 brick coir per tub

Immediately introduced into fruiting conditions (12/12 hour light cycle, lids positioned upside-down), light misting twice a day

KSSS:

Lgt looks much better than the ksss,  but imo neither looks great.

The surface of the ksss is crazy, I’ve never seen anything like that.

yeah :,(

Reading Recognizing and dealing with contamination, I wonder if this is trichoderma...?
Quote:

Soft patches - Contaminated substrate may become squishy or soft and crumble apart easily. The bright white patches Trichoderma can produce has the consistency of a squishy skin.

I poked the surface on the KSSS and indeed it was soft and squishy and came apart easily, and there wasn't much evidence of mushroom myc beneath this overlay:

here're some updated shots of the LGT:

I think I should ditch the KSSS. But should I let the LGT keep going at this point?

I’d keep them both and see what happens.

It’s not trich, I’d guess bacteria of some kind.

The lgt looks alright.

You can see trich here at the bottom left corner of the big hole.

It turns green very quick, probably within 12 hours. I rarely catch it when it’s still all white.

Looking at this more, I wonder if this is just some kind of myc matting? Perhaps acting in this way due to bacteria? And whether I should try casing it with some coir?

An update on these tubs. I'm now at day 19 following spawning. I'm having a lot of trouble maintaining surface conditions, the corners especially keep drying out and I'm not getting many pins on the top surface, despite seeing a lot of knotting. I'm misting twice a day, each time so I see light droplets sitting on the myc. Both lids have remained flipped from the time of spawning. Ambient temp is around 75-80, RH around 30–50

KSSS:
Seemed to have stalled, so I turned over the sub, which broke into pieces in the process, so I roughly re-arranged it and added a 1/8–1/4" layer of coir a few days ago (processed via bucket tek). The KSSS myc loved the fresh coir casing and colonized most of it. I've got lots of knotting, but only a couple of pins and some side pins. I just tried flipping the lid to the right-way-up to see if that helps encourage some surface pinning

LGT:
Seemed to have stalled as well, despite having knotting, and it just kept on getting dry. So I just added a thin layer of coir to this as well. I started getting pins, but not many, and crazy sidepins.

I'm still misting twice a day, however I presume my surface conditions are still not right due to the sidepins, and I can see visible drying on the corner areas of both tubs.

I feel like I've been following the TEKS and guide for surface conditions, I don't know what I'm doing wrong! Are my subs drying out perhaps?

Any tips would be appreciated!!
