A buff around my neck at all times for rapid deployment and two N95's in my glovebox when I need them.

I have a couple n95 masks for myco work
I have not worn any PPE when going in public since the outbreak. I do groceries every 2 weeks and sometimes a random store run for other shit.
I have begun to not give a fuck about this thing...
Yesterday I did groceries and I didn't even wash my hands when I got home. I stopped wiping shit down. I don't care anymore. Let it kill me or let's move the fuck on

Oh yeah before ya'll bombard me about how WE NEED TO WEAR MASKS to protect others...
I live in Canada and a rough estimate is about 1% of the people I see wear masks. It's probably lower. This includes store employees. It isn't mandatory at the grocery store I go to for any employee.

I have a 6 pack of N-95's. Most of them are in need of repair now. Mostly cleaning and new bands, I also got a 6 pack of KN-95's that Ythan posted about.
In the city and on the subway you can be sure that I'm sporting that N-95. While hiking in the redwoods or the beach I wear a bad-ass bandana that I got from Rothbury Music Festival. I look like a hippie bandit!
JSB, what is a buff? Is that English talk for a scarf? oor more like a bandana?

I have a few of the Kn95's that Ythan linked to. I mostly just use a basic cotton/dust mask. Does well enough at keeping my germs to myself if I'm infected.

buffs are made from a fabric that is meant to let your breath pass through so it doesnt get all moist by your mouth when you breath.
You need something that isnt so breathable.
sure it will stop realy big droplets but it lets alot of moist breath through.
I have a respirator, i just use surgical masks at work though.

If you're wearing masks do you assume the exterior and filters are contaminated after using outside? What's the proper technique for sanitising a reusable mask after use?
I'm guessing much as if we were using plates in a sab... Spray down with 70% iso/bleach solution/whatever sanitiser and be considered when handling/moving/fitting the mask using the appropriate gloves washing hands and surfaces etc.
I'm just thinking it's all well and good having a mask but don't we need to think about the technicalities of using one?

Man you should really do that like regardless of whether a new epidemic is going on or not.
Children pick their butt cracks and stuff and then touch things and then you come along and buy that thing and then stick your finger in your mouth to get something out of your teeth and bam e.coli.
Or flu or other things. There's alot of highly contagious things out there that you don't want to have. Hand, foot, and mouth disease comes to mind. Children are very susceptible to it but adults can get it too.
Quote:
Common constitutional signs and symptoms of the HFMD include fever, nausea, vomiting, feeling tired, generalized discomfort, loss of appetite, and irritability in infants and toddlers. Skin lesions frequently develop in the form of a rash of flat discolored spots and bumps which may be followed by vesicular sores with blisters on palms of the hands, soles of the feet, buttocks, and sometimes on the lips.[17] The rash is rarely itchy for children,[4] but can be extremely itchy for adults. Painful facial ulcers, blisters, or lesions may also develop in or around the nose or mouth.[1][18][19] HFMD usually resolves on its own after 7–10 days.[18] Most cases of the disease are relatively harmless, but complications including encephalitis, meningitis, and paralysis that mimics the neurological symptoms of polio can occur.
Seriously. There's alot of shit out there you don't want to get.

Yeah. You do.
Boil in water works for some, a hot washing machine cycle for others, or you can just leave it out to air for a few days.
Lots of medical facilities use UV sanitizers.

if you are trying to prevent infection yes. only if you have a respirator. regular masks wont really work that way.
me, i assume the mask will not help me but will prevent me from infecting others. i still try not to touch the outside of the mask without sanitizinf my hands though. but its about keeping your germs to yourself. not keeping other people's germs out.

Should have washed yo hands

I dunno maybe I'm crazy but if I touched all the groceries and bags at the check out then anything on my hands got on my steering wheel and every where else. So by that practice really you should be hand sanitizing after you touch everything and still wiping down all your groceries when you get home. All the time.
Maybe I'm being stubborn but I seriously don't know of anyone in my whole entire life who did a routine hand washing after going to any store, ever

I have a couple masks my mom lovingly made me. They are comfy and have filters and pass the candle test. I also bought a few online recently.

That's why best practice is to wash your hands frequently.
Let's say you have 2 million e.coli bacterium on your hands. You touch something and a few thousand transfer to that surface.
You wash your hands and eliminate 1.99 million e.coli bacterium. Now your immune system only has to fight that + whatever you might pick back up from the surface you touch again.
If you're washing your hands frequently and not touching your mouth frequently there's a good chance almost none will make it to the point where it could make you sick.
How sick you get is partially a result of how much bacteria or virus you get in your system. Same with feeling sick at all.
That's partly why despite people being exposed to e.coli and salmonella quite regularly people relatively rarely get sick from it.
You're not just lowering your risk of getting it there at all but also lower the number of organisms your body would have to fight.
You don't have to do it and I won't shame you for not doing it but it's a good daily practice anyway. Outbreaks would never be so bad as they are if people just did the simple things. I used e.coli as an example because hand washing is the most effective way to fight it. And it would almost never have outbreaks if people regularly and properly washed their goddamn hands.

I have a glove compartment fullof shitty "surgical" masks. They gice us one every day at work. I keep them and use them when I go shopping.
I bought an Olson mask off of Etsy. It should be here next week. I have a HEPA filter to cut up and put in it. I also just got my black balaclava, and some blue fabric.
Gonna make myself a Sub-Zero costume.

My sister sowed many face masks and I got one. Here in Michigan a lot of places "require" masks but none of the places enforce the rule. But the effect of the signs work. I'd say 85% of people wear masks out in public here.

Candle test I learned the hard way. One of my first times sterilizing a scalpel for this hobby, i had alcohol up my arm and went up in flames. I kept blowing and nothing was happening with my n95 on! If you can blow a candle out it's not working!

Pasting this from the stickied thread:
I'm looking into getting filtered masks. Any recommendations on good ones for a non-expensive price?
I'm interested in this one because it has an adjustable strap:
https://www.amazon.com/Dustproof-Outdoor-Filtration-Exhaust-Allergy/dp/B086SS6PWL/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=air%2Bfiltration%2Bmask&qid=1589746086&sr=8-1&th=1
When I was collecting carts a couple years ago I could have used a filtered mask when the parking lot was being worked on. Never crossed my mind though.

I had five of those ship to my house. They look disposable. Am I wrong in that? Can we reuse these from https://www.amorususa.com/products/kn-95-mask ?

I have a few different varieties. I've been working this whole time with the general public so I've gotten pretty accustomed to wearing one for long periods of time. The disposable ones we have at work (like any mask you see at the hospital) are the most comfortable for long amounts of time. I also have a handmade fabric one which I wear when I'm out running errands. Nobody really wears them anymore where I live, but I still do more as a courtesy to others. I also have an N95, but that stays home for mycology now.

I reuse mine. They seem pretty reusable to me and decent quality. If I was in a hospital or around a sick person then I probably would throw it away.

I haven’t been to wal mart since late February. I just got a mask in the mail. I don’t really want to shop in a store while, such a thing is going on. I don’t have no job. And I guess that’s a good thing. Because I wouldn’t want to work, during such a thing. It’s like, frustrated that I never could be capable of getting a job but now that’s over shadowed 1 million times by just being glad I don’t have a job because I don’t want to deal with the bullshit
