Phone with good camera OR standalone compact digital camera?

I don't know much about cameras, are the cheap standalone cameras (say £300 max) better picture quality than a top of the line smartphone worth £1000 say.
Already have a phone but not sure to upgrage for a better camera or just get a digital camera, good for both landscape/nature shots and good detail on closeup pics of mycelium on agar say
Any advice is appreciated

I grew up in the days before phones had cameras and it used to suck having to lug around two devices rather than one. I smashed two digital cameras that way.
Not going back to that again!!

I remember those days too! Lots of anomalies in development of film was awesome.

Meh. Poor workmanship...Well-processed decent quality film has no 'anomalies'. I shoot mostly film because I don't enjoy digital printmaking, so I'm pretty well aware of the pros and cons of using film. Inherent fundamental flaws are not part of those.
As to the original question: today's high-end smartphones have pretty good cameras, to the level that I would not say that a separate camera is necessarily better for the purposes of most users. Yes, the optics of a decent standalone camera are better and consequently, image quality can be a bit better. But most users won't notice the difference in image quality. The difference is relevant if you need to work with longer focal lengths, i.e. you want to 'zoom in' on objects from a distance, to put it in layman's terms. Smartphones are just not good at that; they tend to have fixed-focus wide-angle lenses that offer a wide perspective, but generally do a relatively poor job at 'zooming in', which is often simply done by cropping the center bit of a wider image, resulting in relatively poor image quality. Some smartphones have tiny little zoom lenses that offer some telephoto capability, but it's inherently limited by the small package size that a camera module in a phone needs to fit into.
So it really depends on what you want to photography and how serious/anal retentive you are about image quality. For the vast majority of users who just want to make random snapshots of things and scenes they come across, a decent smartphone is usually perfectly adequate. For more specific uses, a dedicated camera system is still the way to go, but it comes at a financial cost and is not necessarily more easy to use. And as JSB points out, it's just another device to carry with you. A popular saying among photographers is that 'the best camera is the one that you happen to hold in your hands when you want to take a picture'. A high-end camera system is obviously of no use if it sits on a shelf in your home because it's too cumbersome to carry around.

That's a very good point a camera phone would be much easyer than having two seperate devices.
Some good information glad you had some input I wouldn't have known phones are bad for close ups and I do like to snap closeups of shrooms and agar etc... But always noticed with my phone when I zoom in there's just no detail.

Id get a standalone camera. U can do a lot more with it than a cell phone camera. Sony, Canon, Nikon, all good brands. Try to spend as much as u can to get the best camera.
www.cnet.com has some excellent reviews on various digital cameras. Check it out!

If it doesn't have interchangeable telescopic lenses, you're better off with a phone.
If you're generally trying to get into photography, a standalone camera. If you're just trying to take nice photos, a phone with a good camera.

I got the new Polaroid. There is a cool documentary about it. Like back in the day Polaroid was up there with Xerox and ibm as the top technology firm in the world. It was basically a chemical engineering miracle that they got it to work in the first place. Polaroid was like Apple is now.
But they didn't keep up with technology and went bankrupt. A bunch of the chemicals used to make the film turned out to be toxic and whatever so they shuttered the plant. 5 engineers bought up all the equipment and redesigned the chemical process with safe chemicals from scratch. It was like a second miracle. And now you can buy the new cameras and film.
The quality is terrible compared to digital, but there is something about having a physical copy of the picture within a couple of minutes.
The film is like $2 a pop I think.

I've thought about this question a few times in the last few days. I think if I was a serious photographer then I'd have to have a standalone camera. Holding a mobile phone isn't the most comfortable thing and I imagine holding a bigger and bulkier standalone camera would make me get more into the hobby.

In my opinion, a standalone just feels better and makes taking the picture easier. Its just so straight-forward. Its like using a tablet vs using a mouse and keyboard.
