Fruiting Chamber Dimensions Thread (Pf Tek) * 1
    #26654302 - 05/07/20 02:44 AM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Hi everyone,

I am currently working on my first cultivation of P Cubes, Golden Teachers using the PF Tek method! :mushroom2:

I am ready to make a fruiting chamber as my jars are almost done incubating.

I was simply wondering, what size fruiting chamber I should use? I have searched Google and this forum and cannot find any info about the size or dimensions for a fruiting chamber with X amount of jars.

Info:
I currently have 14 total 1/2 pint jars (bought at dollar store) that are about 3.5 inches tall and about 2.5 inches wide. I would say they are average but I know some are using the short stubby jars for Pf Tek as some say they are better.

Questions (x2):

#1- How much space should each cake have, both width around the cake and also height above the cake? I am guessing more space is always better but I am limited for space so I was wondering mainly what can I get away with trying to pack them as tight as possible without sacrificing quality, quantity or size of the flush if that makes sense.

Thoughts: I have looked at pics of other flushes of GT and noticed that there is obviously a large variation, but it seemed like, to be safe, I should have a tote with a height that is about twice the height of the jars. For example I have 3.5" jars so at least a 7" high tote would be good. As for the width/ circumference around the jar, it seemed from pictures (eyeballing it) that I would need at least about a 1.5" radius around the jar to let the little guys grow. For example if 2 jars are "next" to each other than they would need 3" in between them, or 1.5" each and at least 1.5" from the wall of the tote. These figures could be way off, what are your thoughts?

Question #2- How much perlite should be put in the bottom of the fruiting chamber? Is there some kind of ratio? For example, if the fruiting chamber is X" tall and Y" long than you should put Z" of damp perlite on the bottom of the chamber? Or possibly its done but how many cakes are in one tote? For example if you have 4 cakes in one tote than you should put X" of perlite in the bottom VERSUS having 8 cakes in one tote than you should have more or less perlite.

Note: I know I am probably overthinking it here but I am trying to be as accurate as possible. I am taking this very seriously from inoculation till now and I want to continue to be methodical and scientific in my approach.

Thanks in advance!

You’re calculating using the dimensions of jars. Cakes, especially once fully consolidated, will shrink and are dimensionally smaller than their container at birth. You’re also overthinking it entirely. Concentrate on 1/4” holes every 2” on all six sides of a tote having 4” of perlite. Use good judgement for the size. Get a big tote. You may want more space in the future to double stack 3 rows of 6 columns with the wide mouth 1/2 pints. 110qt tote and 4 bags of perlite? :super:

110 qt tote sounds huge. If you're dealing with that many cakes, you should probably consider going bulk.

Buy a plastic box. Drill holes and load 4-6 inch of perilite. Then cram as make cakes as you can as close together as you can fit. Don't buy a big huge fruiting chamber and end up with lots of space between cakes.

:whathesaid: Closer together will equate to a better microclimate produced by the cakes which will help them thrive. A good amount of perlite for humidity. The size of fc should be relative to the amount of cakes you have!

My personal recommendation is to abandon the SGFC if you have time to fan 2-3 times a day, just have yourself a tub which has holes on the bottom and maybe one on each of the short faces just above the perlite level, fill it with a generous amount of soaked perlite and then mist all the sides and slap the lid on.

OP can always put them close together yet also has the option of adding more cakes/ shoeboxes/ bags...

Wow, some great responses here, thanks to everyone! I have taken your advice and bought a few larger size totes ~55 quarts. I have 14 1/2 pint cakes as of now and that should be good for now and for the future.

Some questions that came up when looking through the answers are:

1: Should I be putting holes on all 4 sides as well as the Top AND the Bottom ? ( I saw @ModularMind saying all 6 sides)

2: For the holes, should I put them toward the top of the tote, toward the bottom of the tote, or all over? Most pics I have seen have the closer to the top. Just want some feedback

3. Lastly what is the best way to make these 1/4" holes? I am guessing a drill + hole saw?

Thanks in advance!

All 6 sides

Every 2” in a grid pattern.

A 1/4” drill bit. Don't press hard while drilling or you’ll likely crack your tote.

Thanks for the tip modular, So I am a little confused, you don't want to drill holes in the bottom where the Perlite is right?

Thanks!
