Funky looking Subs found near weed spray
    #26652049 - 05/06/20 02:13 AM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Hey all, I found these subs today. They're seem unusual to my rookie eyes:
* metallic golden colour cap (not sure if the pics show it but they're really shiny)
* cap curling around the outside edges
* found near weeds that were sprayed recently (coloured on the ground)

I'm just wondering if maybe these subs look like this due to the woodchips or different habitat and not due to the nearby spray. I looked hard and it doesn't look like these were sprayed, nor was the woodchips they were growing on. The closest spray was about 50cm downhill from these subs.

Any thoughts?

They've probably just dried out a bit, hence the sheen and the curled cap margins.

Are you absolutely positive the ground nearby has been sprayed with weed killer?

Yep absolutely sure. The entire garden bed was surrounded by weeds that had blue spray on them.

Here's some photos of some younger subs in the same patch. You can see the shine on one of these photos.

Not worth the risk, imo, re chemicals.

Cool I'm going to chuck em just in case. They just looked a bit wonk to me and not like a normal, healthy sub.

Even from that photo of the younger specimens in the ground, they're growing in a weird shape. I could be wrong, but it's better to be safe I think.

I've found some that look a bit wonky on top as well and had wondered how much the shape of the cap tends to vary. Some have that perfect nipple and some are *very* round yet have all the characteristics of a sub... is it common to get wonky ones generally? Or less-nippley ones?

Thank you OOISI! Now that I have the lingo (pleated caps) I did some searching on the site, and that's increased my confidence. I've put these shrooms in the dehydrator and I'll keep them.

Thanks for your help.

There have been studies proving that mushrooms don't absorb any toxicity from surrounding chemicals.

If so, they're wrong. I've read several reports where pesticides have been found in mushrooms. Mushrooms are known to accumulate heavy metals, so don't eat mushrooms from roadsides or landfills. Even edible mushrooms can be toxic. Arsenic in laccaria amethystina, arsenic and mercury in coprinus comatus and cadmium in agaricus spp. are good examples of this. You should also look up mycoremediation. That's the practice of growing mushrooms in polluted soil to decontaminate it.

Those Reports Are True, But Only To A Certain Degree. I've Eaten Coprinus Comatus That I Found In My Neighbors Garden Bed & I Know For Sure He Sprays Chemicals For Bugs & I Am Fine.
They've Popped Up & Ive Collected & Ingested Them On A Few Occasions With No Ill Effects.

Bullshit mate. Lead, arsenic, mercury etc. accumulates in your body. Just because you don't get sick right away doesn't mean you won't get cancer in a few years. These are highly toxic heavy metals, this is common knowledge man. You shouldn't go around telling people it's ok to eat contaminated mushrooms.

Then Nobody Should Eat Fish Caught In The Gulf Of Mexico Since They Contain Heavy Metals Too, Yet, Us Folks Down Here On The Gulf Coast Still Catch & Eat Them All Of The Time With No Ill Effects. Restaurants Down Here Serve All Kinds Of Seafood From The Gulf That Contains Heavy Metals. Processed Food Contains Chemicals That Can Give You Cancer, Yet People Still Eat It. Your Point Is Just Ridiculous

Don't throw it out,  replant them in some fresh woodchips.

"Even small amounts of mercury can interfere with brain development, making exposure particularly risky for children younger than six and women in their childbearing years. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates—conservatively—that more than 75,000 babies are born each year with a greater risk of learning disabilities because of their mothers’ mercury exposure. NRDC puts that number as high as 265,000 newborns every year."
This is only in the U.S.
Yes, everything I'm saying is ridiculous.
And mushrooms from contaminated areas have way higher concentration of mercury and other heavy metals than fish from the gulf. But I suppose you think that the amount of heavy metals doesn't matter? 1mg mercury from a fish is just the same as 10mg from a mushroom?

That's True, & No I Wouldn't Say That, But I'd Say There's Alot More People That Catch & Eat Fish Than People Who Hunt & Eat Wild Mushrooms, Especially Down Here. So Overall, Most Of The Mercury & Other Metals People Ingest Are Ingested Through Fish & Other Seafood, Not Mushrooms.

You Could Find The Most "Contaminated" Mushroom Possible & Test To See How Much Heavy Metals It Contained & It Wouldn't Even Compare To The Amount Of Mercury In The Fish From A Good Day Of Fishing. People Aren't Just Catching 1 Little Fish, We Catch Tons Of Flounder, Red & Black Drum, Sheepshead, Etc... We Fill Limits All Season.
