Sterilizing handle before agar transfers

Recently got some #7 scalpels and I can say they definitely make agar easier for me, however, I tend to get paranoid and flame an inch or two past the blade. I notice when I flame the handle it never gets red hot before it gets too hot to hold. I think I remember bod saying somewhere that wiping flat metal surfaces with iso gets them pretty close to sterilized, so should I just wipe the handle between transfers and not worry about flaming it? I’d still be flaming the blade just not the handle.

i throw mine in the PC all the time and then just flame blade between cultures. if an MS plate looks good, ill cut an entire plate from one flaming.

I wipe the handle before I start doing transfers and when I start on another dish. Not in between every transfer.

Sounds risky to me lol I’d rather spend a little more on propane than any more stacks of petris

Sounds reasonable, I’ll try that and see if it helps with these satellites I’ve been getting. More than likely it’s just mediocre technique though lol

i have an excellent low contam lab. mileage may vary. i use polypropylene petris wich are pretty much indestructable and autoclavable
