New local (Victoria, Australia)
    #26649034 - 05/04/20 07:42 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Hey guys!

After being very well spoilt for sub season living in the SE burbs of Melbourne, this is now my first season living in the surf coast region on the SW coast.
Conditions seemed perfect after this weekend so had a stroll around a nearby national park yesterday and the place was absolutely booming with mushrooms, but unfortunately had no luck in finding the ones I was looking for...

I've attached a few of the nicer pics of species I saw, my question is: Can subs typically be found very close to the coast, or would I have more luck taking the search a bit further inland? If all else fails the Otways aren't too far away, and I've heard they're fertile hunting grounds, but I'm trying to avoid long drives during this quarantine.

Cheers!

I read your post with great interest as I'm also on the Surfcoast and your photos have summed up my last two weeks - plenty of interesting mushrooms but no subs!

Can I ask for a rough approximation of how far inland you went? I was starting to have the same worries about Surfcoast vs Melbourne myself...

Great subs find by the way, well done

Hey muggins thanks, I found these ones in a decent size patch in the geelong region so not a huge hike inland by any stretch. Since then have found a few more in a smaller patch on the surf coast so they definitely are around if you can find the right spots
But yeah don’t seem to be quite as prevalent as certain parts of melbourne unfortunately

I've found plenty near the coast but haven't looked on the coast. I've typically found them about 1km+ inland. I don't know enough about this but I wonder if the salt in the soil would impact the growth potential? At any rate, there are sh**loads on the surf coast. Absolutely sh**loads. I had some mates heard of some people living in Torquay years back and they were getting them winter after winter from Torqers to Portland, wherever the surf took them. Good times. (side note: the same guys were also a good hookup for LSD which we some people distributed down the Mornington Peninsula during the summer months. If you ever had Aliens in the late 90s they were probably via them).

Edit; living by the ocean provides a slightly more temperate transition between seasons. 1 degree warmer might make a difference to sensitivity to the length of day - where some areas get colder weather (think Bendigo) the day length might have less of an impact because it's f***king freezing from Easter onwards. I'm about 3km from the water and the "open growth" season really only started properly here this week. Last week there were spotty patches hidden amongst the scrub. Today I found 3 big patches in the open on woodchips where last week there was no sign of growth. Big suckers, too. I measured one with a 10cm cap and the bluest of blue bruising!

Thanks to both of ye for your replies!

I've had another week of many hours foraging and many inactives found.

As you said BreakingBricks - it does stand to reason there'd be loads on the Surfcoast, we're at the foot of the Otways after all. Interesting point about the more temperate climate too...

Anyways, between the Anglesea bush and the
wood chips of Torquay, I slog onwards
