Deer trails are awesome along the river!! And if you're right on the river, the small drainages that flow back toward the river are great. I feel ya'll, I hunt real thick shit.

I've seeded patches before by placing a sterile peach pit in the agar plate, let that colonize and place in woody debris.

I'd be weary about eating that. Walnuts can paralyze fish and do crazy things to worms and insects.

Walnuts are allelopathic, & the chemical they exude is toxic to some mammals - such as horses. But since humans commonly eat walnuts, I’m 99% sure they’re fine

SEPA guys out there, look harder! They are definitely here, the other day I went to a new spot and picked 200-300 g's wet within 10 minute all from only 2 or 3 clusters. There was plenty more but I was satisfied with a decent haul and good new spot.

I'll try a few other spots. Guess I won't be standing in knotweed anymore lol. I'm determined to find at least one.

@thereactionsite when you say sepa guys.....how far east/south do you mean? I'm confident that the east-most part and southern Ny still aren't in season....I was searching woods for hours and could hardly find any healthy/noticeable fungi growing..let alone ovoids

OhVoid said: Japanese knotweed is fine but Box Elders seem to really be the primary indicator. In the last 2 weeks I've found them in every sort of underbrush, the one common factor is always lots of box elders in flood plains near rivers.
Also if you have to get into the thick stuff following deer tracks has been key since the ground cover is more sparse on either side and you can see a little better.
they really like to gro around the base of the japanese knotweed clusters. Usually you know you are in the right habitat when you can see knotweed boxelder and nettle all in the same place. Found a few new patches in mulch today. Use them lunch breaks!

This thick ones like to hide in the knotweed, it is more labor intensive to get them but worth it.

Eating the nut is fine, but the meat and the shell are completely different. Just saying, I wouldn't, you will... To each is own

Honestly I would do some research on juglone toxicity and mushrooms. I'm no expert, I just want everyone to be safe. Decomposing black walnut shells are are toxic.

Mushrooms don't carry any toxic matter that they grow next to, I'm pretty sure there's been studies

“The bark, woods, nuts, and roots of J. nigra contain juglone, a compound which is toxic to horses.”
EDIT: Wo, just found this too. “Additionally, the husks surrounding fallen nuts can become toxic as they start to decay. Penicillium mold affects the decomposing husk and produces a neurotoxin called Penitrem A, which is toxic to livestock and can be fatal to dogs. People should also be wary; black walnuts are edible but can be contaminated with Penitrem A if they hulls have begun to decompose before the nuts are harvested.”
That’s crazy, but again, not likely since 1) another fungus is decomposing the shell 2) it’s the HULLS that become toxic, not the shells and 3) I’m not eating the nut.

There’s no knotweed in those pics tho.

Well after the flooding last week my hopes was dwindling because of my most recent spot being consumed with water. So I went to another in hopes to get what I could if I could find any at all? I had hunted this spot years ago without success but that was before I actually found any.
The area is a flood plain, actually it's more of a debris field covered in knotweed, stinging nettle & briars + they are virtually impossible to spot. I use a hand-rake very carefully & use the same concept I use for morels - you find 1 there are more.
